Director Shamzu Zayba Arrested in Financial Fraud Case Over Malayalam Film 'Abhilasham'
In a significant development within the Malayalam film industry, director Shamzu Zayba has been arrested by Tripunithura police in connection with a financial fraud case registered by the producer of his film 'Abhilasham'. The arrest occurred on Wednesday night following a formal complaint from producer Ann Sariga Antony, who has accused the director of serious financial misconduct during the film's production.
Producer Alleges Major Budget Breach and Financial Misuse
According to police officials and reports from Kerala Kaumudi, the complaint centers on allegations that director Shamzu Zayba breached the original budget agreement and misappropriated funds during the shooting of 'Abhilasham'. The producer specifically stated in her complaint that the director "took more money than the agreement for the shoot of the film" and that she felt "cheated and betrayed in terms of money" after discovering the film's expenses had dramatically exceeded the original plan.
Ann Sariga Antony maintained that she had placed complete trust in the director, only to discover that the film's expenses "went far beyond what was promised." She detailed that Shamzu Zayba had initially assured her the film could be completed within a budget of Rs 2.25 crore. However, when shooting concluded, the final production cost had escalated to approximately Rs 3.25 crore, representing a substantial difference of nearly one crore rupees. The producer alleged this significant budget increase was unexplained and resulted from financial manipulation.
Director Denies Allegations, Claims Personal Vengeance
In response to these serious allegations, director Shamzu Zayba has reportedly rejected the claims and suggested the complaint was motivated by personal vengeance. His statement to police indicated he had "only taken the expenses for the shooting" and that the dispute with the producer began during the filming process. He claimed Ann Sariga Antony was "taking revenge for this" disagreement and reiterated that no funds beyond what was necessary for production were utilized.
The director insisted the budget increase occurred due to unavoidable circumstances during filming rather than any financial misconduct on his part. Police have confirmed that while the complaint mentioned five additional crew members who worked on 'Abhilasham', action has currently been taken only against director Shamzu Zayba, with other names remaining under review for potential involvement.
Background of the Film and Its Reception
'Abhilasham' marked Shamzu Zayba's directorial venture following his previous work 'Maniyarayile Ashokan'. The film featured prominent actors Saiju Kurup, Tanvi Ram, and Arjun Ashokan in lead roles, with the script penned by Jenith Kachappilly. Released in March 2025, the film received generally positive critical acclaim for its artistic merits and storytelling, though it did not achieve strong commercial performance in theatrical release.
Interestingly, the Saiju Kurup-starrer found renewed appreciation and audience engagement following its subsequent release on OTT platforms, where it garnered significant viewer attention and positive response. This financial dispute case has now cast a shadow over what was otherwise considered a respectable addition to Malayalam cinema, raising questions about financial transparency and accountability within film production processes.
The arrest of a film director on financial fraud charges represents a rare but serious development in the regional film industry, highlighting the complex financial arrangements and trust relationships that underpin film production. As the legal proceedings continue, industry observers are watching closely to see how this case might influence production practices and financial accountability measures within the entertainment sector.
