Kerala Director Faces Formal Charges in Sexual Assault Case
The Cantonment Police in Thiruvananthapuram have officially filed a chargesheet against prominent Malayalam film director P T Kunju Muhammed. The case centers on allegations that the director grabbed and sexually insulted a female film worker during a film festival event.
Hotel Room Incident and Police Investigation
According to police reports documented in the chargesheet, the alleged incident occurred inside a hotel room in Thiruvananthapuram. The complainant told investigators that Kunju Muhammed forcefully held her against her will. After thoroughly checking all details provided by the woman, police formally added her complaint to the official case file.
CCTV Evidence Supports Timeline
Investigators were able to collect crucial CCTV footage from the hotel area where the incident reportedly took place. The surveillance video shows the complainant walking near the specific room where Kunju Muhammed was staying at the exact time the alleged crime occurred.
While the footage does not capture the actual assault, police confirm it provides important corroboration by placing the woman at the location during the critical timeframe. This visual evidence strongly supports the timeline she provided to authorities and has been formally submitted as part of the chargesheet evidence.
Legal Charges and Potential Consequences
The chargesheet includes sections related to insulting womanhood and sexual assault under relevant provisions of Indian law. If convicted, these offenses carry a maximum penalty of up to five years imprisonment. The court will now examine all submitted evidence, including the CCTV footage and witness statements, before determining the next legal steps in the case.
Industry Response and WCC Statement
Prior to the formal chargesheet filing, the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) had already expressed strong concerns about the allegations. In an official statement, the organization condemned the reported assault, describing it as deeply disturbing and shameful.
The WCC specifically referenced that the alleged incident occurred during the 30th edition of the International Film Festival of Kerala (IFFK), where Kunju Muhammed served as Selection Committee Chairperson. Their statement emphasized that IFFK represents a prestigious event that brings pride to Malayalis worldwide, and maintaining its integrity requires collective responsibility.
The collective called for greater accountability from festival organizers and stressed that individuals in positions of power must be held responsible when women feel unsafe or insulted within festival environments. Their intervention highlighted broader concerns about safety and respect for women working in the Malayalam film industry.
