The disturbing allegations surfaced on the website The Underground Bunker, where a fan using the pseudonym Dawn shared screenshots of her exchange with Evan Dando on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Dawn had initially messaged Dando last year to congratulate him on The Lemonheads' latest album 'Love Chant,' which was released in October 2025. Dando responded on February 4 with the message: "Cool I'm sorry I'm an exhibitionist." Dawn replied supportively, encouraging him to be unapologetically himself.
However, the situation took a troubling turn when Dando asked if he could send an "art" photo, followed by a video that allegedly showed him engaging in inappropriate behavior. Dawn described her reaction: "I put the phone down and just sat there and waited for [my husband] to wake up. I wasn't sure how to process it." The following day, Dando sent another video along with messages reading "ok sorry thanks I just need an outlet" and "cheers." Dawn expressed her anger, stating: "I've never felt anger like that. Don't call me an outlet, that's gross." Shortly after these exchanges, Dando deactivated his X account, though he briefly reactivated it before taking it offline again.

Evan Dando's representative confirmed the hospitalization to People magazine on February 13, framing it within the context of the musician's lifelong mental health challenges. The representative issued a statement saying: "Evan Dando has long struggled with mental health issues dating back to his childhood. He's been admitted to a local hospital where he's receiving comprehensive help from experienced doctors and mental health professionals." The representative declined to comment further on the specific allegations.
Dando's wife, Antonia Teixeira, provided additional insight to The Boston Globe, revealing that her husband had experienced a "manic episode" and is "really trying to get better." The couple, who married in Brazil in 2024, had appeared to be on a positive trajectory before this incident.

In the book, he described hitting rock bottom, stating: "I was in horrible shape, losing teeth. And living off cheeseburgers, which I could barely chew, Marlboro Reds, purple Powerade, and a $200 daily drug budget." Dando successfully quit heroin, speed, and cocaine by February 2021, but admitted in an interview with The New York Times that he still used over-the-counter substances and marijuana, along with Vyvanse for ADHD.
Reflecting on his relationship with substances, Dando shared a philosophical perspective: "I don't believe God meant us to be sober. Why would monks make booze? I just know that heroin is really, really satanic for me."
