Hilary Duff Revisits Iconic Anti-Bullying PSA After Nearly Two Decades
In a recent emotional interview, actress and singer Hilary Duff opened up about her involvement in the groundbreaking "Think Before You Speak" public service announcement, filmed back in 2008. Despite the passage of almost twenty years, Duff emphasized that the campaign's core message against bullying and harmful language is as relevant and personal today as it was then.
Duff's Emotional Reflection on the Campaign's Impact
During her conversation with Gay Times, Duff recalled how the PSA aimed to combat the casual use of phrases like "that's so gay" among teenagers, which was prevalent at the time. She explained her motivation for joining the project, stating, "I think I was just asked if I was interested in being in the PSA and if I cared about the topic at hand and, of course, I did." The campaign was a collaboration with GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network, focusing on educating youth about the hurtful implications of such language.
Duff became visibly upset while discussing the ongoing issues of prejudice and hate. She expressed her frustration, saying, "It's 2026, and who cares how anybody wants to be? Nobody's bothering you. I just wish people would let everyone be who they want, be happy, be loved." She added that it saddens her to see people still facing judgment based on their identity, skin color, or choices.
The PSA's Simple Yet Powerful Message
The "Think Before You Speak" ad featured Duff in a store overhearing two women, with one describing a top as "so gay." Duff intervenes, calling out the use of "gay" as an insult and urging them to reconsider their words. The video concludes with her voiceover: "When you say 'that's so gay,' do you realize what you say? Knock it off." This straightforward approach highlighted how everyday language can cause harm and encouraged mindfulness in speech.
Duff remembered the positive feedback from young fans, who thanked her for making them feel seen and supported. "I think they felt represented and stood up for, and at that time, and in this time, it's really important to feel safe and feel seen," she recalled. The campaign's success was recognized with a Gold Bell award, and it continues to resonate, often going viral on platforms like TikTok through spoofs and shares.
Duff's Continued Advocacy and Legacy
Known for her role as Lizzie McGuire on Disney Channel, Hilary Duff has built a multifaceted career as an actress and pop singer, alongside her dedication to charitable causes. Her activism spans youth programs, disaster relief, and anti-bullying efforts, with the "Think Before You Speak" PSA standing out as a memorable highlight. Duff admitted that if she were to recreate the PSA today, she would need to channel her anger constructively, noting, "that's not the way to spread a message, either."
The enduring relevance of the campaign underscores the persistent challenges of bullying and discrimination in society. Duff's heartfelt reflections serve as a reminder of the importance of empathy and thoughtful communication in fostering a more inclusive world.
