From Streaming Success to Theatrical Ambition: The Birth of a Sequel
When the 2024 Malayalam film Bharathanatyam became an unexpected sleeper hit on OTT platforms, its lead actor Saiju Kurup immediately recognized its potential for expansion. Believing the story had more to offer, Kurup approached director Krishnadas Murali with the idea of a sequel. Initially, Murali was hesitant, feeling that the first film's conclusion didn't naturally lend itself to a continuation.
"We told him if it doesn't work, we'd let go of the idea," shares Kurup about their persistent approach. Despite the director's reservations, Kurup and his production partner encouraged Murali to reconsider. To their surprise, within just one week, Krishnadas returned with a compelling story narration that completely won over the actor.
A Genre Shift and New Setting
Mohiniyattam continues the narrative of protagonist Shashi and his family but takes a dramatic turn in tone and location. "In about 10 days, he had a one-line ready. It was superb. He's shifted the genre, and we pick up from after the 40th-day funeral rituals of Bharathan Nair, the father," explains Kurup.
While Bharathanatyam was primarily a feel-good family drama set in Thrissur, its sequel embraces dark humor and relocates to Sreekandapuram in north Kerala. This geographical shift introduces a fresh ensemble of characters as Shashi and his family help his stepmother and half-brother resettle in their hometown.
Expanding the Cast and Reuniting the Family
The new setting allowed the filmmakers to incorporate several notable actors into the sequel's universe:
- Suraj Venjaramoodu
- Jagadish
- Vinay Forrt
- Rapper Baby Jean
These performers portray the local villagers of Sreekandapuram, adding depth and authenticity to the narrative. Simultaneously, the production facilitated a heartwarming reunion with the original film's principal cast, including Divya M Nair as Kurup's sister, along with Kalaranjini and Sreeja Ravi as the mothers.
"It was like a family coming together after two years," Kurup reflects on the nearly two-month shoot. "It was really enjoyable shooting together again. Also, I have worked with most of the actors who have joined the sequel at some point in my career, so there was a comfort level on sets."
Learning from Audience Feedback
The creative team actively incorporated viewer responses from the first film to enhance the sequel. According to Kurup, audience feedback highlighted two primary areas for improvement in Bharathanatyam: it lacked a strong theatrical feel, and the story took approximately thirty minutes to gain momentum.
"This time, Krishnadas designed it for theatres," Kurup emphasizes. "Also, I told him that the thrills should start at the 15th minute, but he's done one better and it takes off in a few minutes from the start. This will be an entertainer for the whole family."
To amplify the cinematic experience, the production team enlisted Electronic Kili to compose the music, further distinguishing the theatrical ambitions of Mohiniyattam from its streaming-oriented predecessor.
Director's Vision: Avoiding Repetition
Director Krishnadas Murali was particularly determined to avoid simply replicating the successful formula of the first film. "Doing a repeating the genre would get too boring," he explains. "With the new movie, it was exciting to get the same characters to now do dark humour."
Murali describes Mohiniyattam as more event-filled and dynamic than its predecessor. "This film has a lot more happening in the story; it is more event-filled. The shoot was a bit hectic, because we were keen to make sure that it will click with audiences in theatres. Bharathanatyam was made for streaming, so it was a smaller film, but this has been made to keep audiences excited throughout."
Working with New Talent
The director expressed particular enthusiasm about collaborating with the sequel's new cast members. "Jagadish sir is a pucca professional," Murali notes. "He arrives early for his scenes and clears his doubts. His experience was evident on set."
Regarding National Award-winning actor Suraj Venjaramoodu, Murali observes: "With Suraj chetan, we can see how he elevates his character from script to the scene, and then, we see why he is a National Award-winning actor. He has such an aura. And he is also entertaining, doing mimicry and beatboxing on location."
Mohiniyattam is scheduled for theatrical release on April 10, marking a significant evolution from its OTT origins to a full-fledged cinematic experience designed to captivate family audiences across Kerala and beyond.
