In a recent development, actor Jaaved Jaaferi has voiced his agreement with AR Rahman's controversial comment about the film industry becoming increasingly communal over the past eight years. This statement has sparked a heated debate within Bollywood, with various celebrities weighing in on the issue.
Jaaved Jaaferi's Perspective on Industry Changes
Offering a broader perspective, Jaaved Jaaferi emphasized that the film industry, much like the country and the world at large, has undergone significant transformations. He highlighted the impact of digital advancements and artificial intelligence, noting how these factors are reshaping narratives and audience behaviors.
'Industry Has Changed Like the World Has Changed'
Speaking to IANS, Jaaved elaborated, "Industry has changed like the world has changed. Digital. AI. The world is changing. Fashion is changing, food is changing. Values are changing. Obviously, the narrative is changing." He further pointed out the shrinking attention spans of younger generations, stating that capturing interest within six seconds has become crucial in today's fast-paced environment.
Jaaved also discussed the structural shifts in storytelling, mentioning the rise of long-format content alongside traditional films. He noted, "There are choices but at the same time, there is business. There are numbers. You are making a project. Not a film." This reflects the evolving dynamics where commercial considerations often influence creative decisions.
Manoj Muntashir's Counterargument
In contrast, writer Manoj Muntashir strongly rejected AR Rahman's claims, arguing that Bollywood's inclusivity is evident through its top Muslim superstars. He stated, "This is a country whose biggest superstars are Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan." Muntashir also referenced celebrated Muslim writers and poets, as well as former cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin, to support his view that discrimination is absent in the industry.
Challenging the Notion of Discrimination
Manoj Muntashir challenged anyone to find evidence of religious bias in Hindi films, saying, "I openly challenge anyone to pick any random film and show me where one particular religion has been given special importance while others were ignored. You will never find anything like that." He emphasized the diverse credits in films, suggesting a pattern of inclusivity rather than exclusion.
Box Office Success and Inclusivity
Disagreeing further with Rahman's timeline, Muntashir pointed to recent blockbusters like Pathaan and Jawan, both starring Shah Rukh Khan, which have shattered box office records. He explained, "In the last eight years, films like Pathaan and Jawan have broken all box office records. This country has a big heart and soul. It does not judge its artists, it loves them."
He concluded by affirming India's inclusive identity, stating, "Any kind of discrimination, of any sort, I completely refuse to believe. This inclusiveness is our identity."
