Bollywood Veterans Clash Over Religious Comments
Veteran lyricist and poet Javed Akhtar has finally responded to singer Lucky Ali's strong criticism where the latter called him a "monster" and "ugly" over religious remarks made in an old video. The controversy erupted when a year-old clip of Akhtar discussing religious tolerance resurfaced on social media platforms.
The Genesis of the Conflict
The conflict began when Lucky Ali, a devout Muslim, took offense to Akhtar's comments about Hindus and Muslims in a viral video from the India Film Project. In his initial reaction on social media platform X, Lucky Ali wrote: "Don't become like Javed Akhtar, never original and ugly as f***". The singer later followed up with another strongly worded post that gained significant traction online.
Akhtar, who identifies as an atheist, had referenced a famous scene from the classic film Sholay where Dharmendra's character hides behind a Lord Shiva statue. In the controversial video, Akhtar questioned whether such a scene could be written today, stating: "Is it possible to have a scene like that today? No, I will not write a scene (like this today)".
Akhtar's Calm Response and Ali's Regret
When approached for comment, Javed Akhtar maintained his characteristic composure, telling India Today: "I must take Lucky Ali's opinion with a pinch of salt. I should accept it. Although I don't agree with it. But anyway, I'm happy to know that he has opinions. That's wonderful". Regarding Ali's sarcastic apology about "monsters also having feelings," Akhtar simply said: "Let him decide what he meant and wants".
As the dust began to settle, Lucky Ali showed remorse for his comments while explaining his emotional reaction. In an interview with Navbharat Times, the singer stated: "No human is perfect. I've also made mistakes. I also regret my misbehaviour towards an elderly person". He added that he would apologize to Akhtar if given the chance, but emphasized that he felt provoked by repeated comments about his community from such a prominent figure.
Broader Context and Reactions
The controversy gained additional momentum last month when Akhtar's comments about the Sholay sequence placed him at the center of social media debates about creative freedom and religious sensitivity. Akhtar elaborated on his stance regarding tolerance, stating: "If you are tolerant, it's good. If you are intolerant in certain matters, particularly which are sensitive, like religious matters, then it's not good".
He further emphasized the importance of hearing opposing viewpoints: "But will you listen to only those opinions that are conducive, that are agreeable for you? You don't want any opposition? That's not fair. Whoever is doing it".
Lucky Ali, while acknowledging his mistake, maintained that "the responsibility is all of ours" when it comes to sensitive discussions about religion and community. The singer clarified that he didn't intend to abuse Akhtar but admitted that his remarks were blown out of proportion.
