Nandita Das Opens Up About Javed Akhtar's Unforgettable Acting Debut in Manto
Nandita Das's critically acclaimed film Manto stands as one of the most powerful biographical dramas of recent Indian cinema. Rather than presenting a glorified portrait of legendary writer Saadat Hasan Manto, the film delves deep into his contradictions, personal wounds, and profound humanity. Among the many memorable performances was a particularly special appearance by celebrated lyricist and screenwriter Javed Akhtar, who made his acting debut in this project.
When the Writer Wanted to Rewrite: Initial Creative Challenges
In a revealing interview, director Nandita Das shared that casting a legendary writer as an actor presented unique challenges. She explained that Javed Akhtar initially approached the script from his perspective as a writer rather than as a performer.
"I have known him for many years, so I was obviously very familiar with him," Das stated. "But of course, when I sent him the script, he wanted to change everything. And I told him, 'Javed saab, aap actor hai iss mein, you are not the writer.'"
This moment established the foundation for their working relationship. Das sought authenticity in the portrayal while needing Akhtar to trust her directorial vision for the film.
A Genuine Collaboration Without Ego Battles
Das emphasized that the creative process never descended into a battle of authority. Instead, it evolved into what she described as a genuine and productive collaboration.
"But like with any good actor, it was collaborative," she explained. "So of course, he added a few things, and I stuck to some other things, and then I gave in on something. It's all for the betterment; it's not about ego or who wrote what. And finally, it all came together and we created something together."
She even added a playful touch to the film's credits as a nod to their working relationship. "The fact that he was quite a sport, and for fun I wrote in the credits, 'Introducing Javed Akhtar,' just for fun," Das revealed with humor.
A Natural Performer Despite Being a Debutant
Despite this being his first acting role, Javed Akhtar displayed remarkable comfort and natural presence on set. Das attributed this to his extensive experience with public appearances and media interactions over the years.
"He was a natural, because he has faced the camera for so long," she observed. "He has done so many interviews, so he was very comfortable."
The director also experimented with Akhtar's appearance to better suit his character. "And then I changed his parting; we did a full look for him, so it was very fun," she added. The result was a small yet unforgettable performance that added significant depth to an already rich cinematic tapestry.
Manto: A Film of Profound Depth and Stellar Performances
Manto focuses intensely on the writer's turbulent years surrounding the Partition of India, exploring both his creative brilliance and personal struggles with equal sensitivity. The film features:
- Nawazuddin Siddiqui delivering a deeply immersive performance as Manto, capturing both his vulnerability and defiance
- Rasika Dugal portraying his supportive yet burdened wife, Safia
- A remarkable supporting cast including Paresh Rawal, Rishi Kapoor, Ranvir Shorey, Tillotama Shome, Divya Dutta, and Neeraj Kabi
The film's exploration of artistic integrity during times of political turmoil, combined with its authentic performances, has cemented its status as a significant work in contemporary Indian cinema. Nandita Das's directorial vision, combined with the collaborative spirit she fostered with her cast, created a biopic that resonates deeply with audiences and critics alike.
