Jeethu Joseph Reveals 'Neru' Was His Most Stressful Project Due to Sensitive Scenes

Renowned filmmaker Jeethu Joseph, best known for the blockbuster 'Drishyam' franchise, has candidly shared that directing the courtroom drama 'Neru' starring Mohanlal was the most stressful experience of his career. In an exclusive interview with The New Indian Express, Joseph opened up about the immense challenges and emotional pressure he faced while shooting this intense thriller.

Intense Pressure During Key Sequences

Jeethu Joseph admitted that making 'Neru' involved unprecedented tension, particularly during crucial sequences that required delicate handling. He described the film as the project that tested him most profoundly as a filmmaker, pushing him to his creative and emotional limits.

"I shot 'Neru' with the most tension I've ever experienced," Joseph revealed. "This primarily stemmed from the sexual assault scene in the film. This marked the first time in my career that I was directing a rape scene with such detailed requirements."

The director contrasted this with his previous work, noting that while his film 'Mirage' contained a similar scene, it was handled with much more restraint. "In 'Mirage', we showed only the legs and concluded the scene there. However, in 'Neru', that approach wasn't possible because we needed to capture facing shots for narrative authenticity. I invested considerable time and thought into shooting this sequence properly."

Balancing Authenticity with Audience Sensitivity

Jeethu Joseph acknowledged the significant risk involved in presenting such sensitive moments on screen, particularly in a mainstream theatrical release. He expressed concern about how audiences, especially families watching together, would react to these intense scenes.

"If families in theaters felt uncomfortable or disturbed, it could have negatively impacted the film's reception," Joseph explained. "Fortunately, the scene passed without causing issues, but the anxiety during production was immense."

Mohanlal's Role and Unexpected Success

Released in December 2023, 'Neru' was conceived as a courtroom investigation thriller with Mohanlal portraying advocate Vijayamohan. Despite modest initial expectations, the film emerged as a commercial and critical blockbuster, receiving widespread praise from both audiences and critics alike.

The success of 'Neru' demonstrated Joseph's ability to handle sensitive subject matter while creating compelling entertainment that resonated with viewers across demographics.

Philosophy on Violence in Storytelling

Jeethu Joseph elaborated on his conscious approach to depicting violence in his films, explaining that he typically tries to reduce the intensity and brutality of violent scenes. He believes that restraint often proves more effective in engaging viewers without overwhelming them emotionally.

"That's why, whether it's a murder scene or any other violent moment, I attempt to minimize the brutality," Joseph stated. "However, I recognize that sometimes only through depicting that brutality can the intended emotional effect truly reach the audience."

The filmmaker also shared his personal discomfort with the level of violence prevalent in many contemporary films, admitting that such content often proves difficult for him to watch.

"I cannot accept the kind of extreme violence featured in many of today's films," Joseph confessed. "I was planning to watch a recently released film, but after seeing some particularly violent scenes, I decided against it. If it appears on an OTT platform, I can fast-forward through those parts, but in theaters, I would have to sit with my eyes closed."

Looking Ahead to 'Drishyam 3'

Meanwhile, Jeethu Joseph continues to work on his highly anticipated project 'Drishyam 3', which is scheduled for release on May 21. The director's revelations about 'Neru' provide fascinating insight into the creative challenges behind one of Malayalam cinema's most successful recent productions.
