Kanye West Appeals Court Decision in Malibu Mansion Contractor Dispute
Famous rapper and entrepreneur Kanye West is refusing to accept a recent court loss regarding his gutted Malibu mansion, filing legal motions to overturn a jury's decision that ordered him to pay former contractor Tony Saxon USD 140,000. The rapper's ongoing legal battle with project manager Saxon has dragged on since 2023, exposing chaotic renovation work on the USD 57 million Tadao Ando-designed property that West purchased in 2021.
West's legal team has called the outcome unfair and vowed to continue fighting in what they frame as a David-versus-Goliath showdown turned upside down. The case centers on allegations of exploitation and unsafe working conditions during the mansion's controversial renovation.
Contractor's Allegations of Exploitation and Unsafe Conditions
Tony Saxon sued Kanye West in September 2023, alleging multiple violations including breach of contract, unpaid wages, unsafe working conditions, and wrongful termination. According to court documents and media reports, Saxon claimed West promised him USD 20,000 weekly to oversee the complete stripping of the mansion, leaving it as nothing more than a concrete shell.
During testimony, Saxon stated he received just one payment and described sleeping on the floor using his coat as bedding after West allegedly ordered him to stay on the property. The contractor testified about serious injuries sustained from hazardous tasks performed without proper safety equipment, including turning a staircase into a slide. Saxon claimed he was fired in November 2021 for refusing to comply with what he considered dangerously risky demands.
While Saxon initially sought USD 1.7 million in damages, the Los Angeles Superior Court jury awarded him USD 140,000 specifically for injuries after a two-week trial that concluded on March 10, 2026. The jury did not award punitive damages or compensation for broader claims.
Kanye West's Legal Defense and Counterclaims
Kanye West's representative, Milo Yiannopoulos, emphasized that the jury only awarded injury-related damages and rejected Saxon's broader claims. Meanwhile, Saxon's lawyer, Rahmani, framed the case as a David-versus-Goliath struggle, stating his client stood firm against one of the world's biggest celebrities with truth on his side.
Rahmani added that they expect to receive over USD 1 million total when legal fees under the California Labor Code are included. In a countermove, West sued Saxon and his attorney in January 2026 over a USD 1.8 million mechanic's lien filed in 2024, calling it unlawful against the property that was sold for USD 21 million in 2024 escrow.
During trial proceedings, West frequently responded with "I'm not sure" when questioned about his role as CEO of Yeezy Construction. His legal team is now focusing on appeals and the lien countersuit, with Yiannopoulos stating they are moving onto what they consider larger and more consequential cases.
Architectural Dreams Turned Legal Nightmares
The Malibu mansion saga reflects Kanye West's turbulent professional journey, transforming from architectural dreams into complex legal nightmares. The concrete shell property was ultimately sold at a significant loss, adding financial complications to the already contentious legal proceedings.
This case continues to unfold in California courts, with both parties preparing for further legal maneuvers. The outcome could have implications for contractor-celebrity relationships in high-value property renovations and establish precedents regarding workplace safety and compensation in similar situations.
