Karisma Kapoor, a reigning queen of Bollywood in the 1990s, is celebrated for her iconic performances and magnetic screen presence. While films like David Dhawan's hit comedy 'Biwi No.1' with Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen are remembered for their laughter and music, a recently revealed incident from its sets paints a stark picture of the dedication hidden behind the glamour.
The Painful Revelation from the Costume Designer
In a recent interview with Galatta India, veteran costume designer Ashley Rebello shared a startling memory from the filming of a song for 'Biwi No.1'. He disclosed that Karisma was outfitted in a elaborate metal dress for a particular dance sequence. During the vigorous choreography, a part of the metal costume pierced her skin, causing her to bleed. "I spotted red coming on to the gold dress," Ashley recalled, describing the moment he noticed the injury.
"No, It's a Full Set": Karisma's Professional Stand
As soon as the crew became aware of the bleeding, the shoot was halted to attend to the actor. The choreographer suggested they postpone the remaining portion to the next day. However, Karisma Kapoor, demonstrating remarkable commitment, refused. She insisted on continuing because a full set with dancers and technicians was already assembled. "Karisma said no, it's a full set. Such a professional person… We shot and we finished the whole thing," Ashley said, admiring her resolve.
To facilitate this, the team quickly devised a solution. They placed a bandage on the wound, covered it with a skin-toned garment, and then put the metal dress back on over it. This allowed them to complete the song sequence as scheduled that very day. The outfit was changed only the following day.
A Testament to Silent Dedication
In a telling follow-up, Ashley Rebello asked Karisma later why she hadn't spoken up about the injury sooner. Her response highlighted her focus on the work: "Ashley, at that time, I didn't think this would happen. I didn't even realise when this happened." This statement, as per the designer, perfectly encapsulated her dedication. The incident has now emerged as a powerful example of the often-unseen professionalism and physical endurance demanded in filmmaking, solidifying Karisma's reputation as a thorough professional.
On the work front, Karisma Kapoor was recently seen with her family in the Netflix special 'Dining with the Kapoors'. Her latest acting role was in the 2024 mystery film 'Murder Mubarak'.
