Kolkata Actor Couple Alleges Assault During Stray Dog Feeding
In a disturbing incident that has sparked debate about animal welfare in urban areas, a prominent Kolkata actor couple claimed they were physically assaulted while feeding stray dogs in the Rajdanga area of Kasba on Friday night. Sayantani Mallick and her husband Indranil, accompanied by their assistant Chandan, found themselves at the center of a violent confrontation with local residents who objected to their animal feeding activities.
The Conflicting Narratives Emerge
According to the Mallicks, the situation escalated quickly when they were approached by residents who demanded they stop feeding the stray dogs. The couple protested this interference, leading to alleged physical violence. Sayantani Mallick revealed she feared suffering a second stroke during the altercation and mentioned that her husband also sustained injuries.
The actress stated in a live video recorded during the incident: "They insisted we could not feed dogs in the locality. Apparently, one of the dogs had bitten someone at some point. So they don't want us to feed them under any circumstances. In trying to stop us, they resorted to violence, which is unacceptable."
Following the confrontation, the couple visited Bangur Hospital for initial treatment before returning home and subsequently filing a formal complaint at Kasba Police Station.
Residents Deny Assault Claims, Plan Counter-Complaint
The local residents presented a completely different version of events, firmly denying any physical assault took place. According to neighborhood sources, the issue wasn't about feeding stray dogs in principle, but rather about the location and manner of feeding.
One resident explained: "We had pointed out that we have no issue with the dogs being fed. But the feeding cannot take place in front of the house. The area gets dirty. Moreover, not all the dogs here are sterilised. This creates a major issue as the dogs scare away children."
Residents claimed the couple became agitated during what was intended as a peaceful discussion, leading to arguments rather than physical violence. Neighbors confirmed they plan to file a counter-complaint against the actor couple, citing previous unresolved issues.
Police Investigation Underway
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Jadavpur-southwest) Bidisha Kalita confirmed that the Mallicks had lodged a formal complaint and a case had been initiated. The police are currently examining evidence from both sides to determine what actually transpired.
DCP Kalita stated: "People in the area told us they wished to file a counter complaint. We are looking into the CCTV footage and recording statements from both sides."
Meanwhile, some community members have expressed willingness to mediate between the conflicting parties and find an amicable solution, emphasizing that any form of violence is unacceptable regardless of the circumstances.
The incident has highlighted the ongoing tension between animal welfare activists and residents in urban neighborhoods across Kolkata, raising important questions about coexistence with stray animals and the responsibilities of those who care for them.
