The breathtaking landscapes traversed by the Konkan Railway, immortalized in blockbusters like the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Chennai Express, are now being formally pitched to the creative minds of Indian cinema. At the ongoing 56th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) in Goa, Konkan Railway is actively enticing filmmakers to utilize its picturesque routes and modernized stations as the perfect backdrop for their cinematic ventures.
A Moving Canvas for Cinema
Sunil Narkar, the Chief Public Relations Officer of Konkan Railway, highlighted the unique appeal of the route. The railway line runs for 740 kilometers, weaving a visual tapestry past the majestic Sahyadri hills, along the stunning western coastline, and beside serene rivers. This naturally cinematic quality has already attracted several film crews in the past. Key scenes from Chennai Express were filmed at Balli and Verna stations, showcasing the route's inherent drama and beauty to millions of movie-goers.
More Than Just Scenery: Tunnels and Upgraded Facilities
Beyond the open landscapes, Konkan Railway offers filmmakers a unique asset: a network of 91 tunnels along its stretch. These tunnels present an ideal setting for dramatic chase sequences and stunt scenes, adding another dimension to its portfolio. Furthermore, the railway corporation has significantly upgraded its infrastructure to accommodate film units comfortably.
"We have redeveloped 12 stations in Maharashtra," stated Narkar, adding that executive lounges and restaurants have been added at other locations. Stations like Tivim and Margao now offer enhanced comfort, and the beautifully lit rail arcade outside Madgaon station provides a ready-made set for night shoots.
Streamlined Permissions and a Shared Vision
Understanding the time-sensitive nature of film production, Konkan Railway promises a hassle-free and swift process for obtaining shooting permissions. Filmmakers are required to specify the locations needed as per their script and the required number of days. Permissions can be processed in as little as a couple of days after the necessary documentation is complete and train movement schedules are accounted for, with a primary focus on safety.
While the revenue from filming activities is a welcome addition, Narkar emphasized that the primary driving force behind this initiative is the desire to showcase the unparalleled beauty of the Konkan route on the silver screen. "Anybody who has travelled this route, knows its beauty," he said, underscoring the railway's pride in its scenic asset and its potential to bring Indian landscapes to a global audience.
