Lisa Müller Reveals the Reality Behind the Glamorous WAG Lifestyle
Life as a football WAG (Wives and Girlfriends) might appear dazzling and enviable from the outside, but Lisa Müller, the spouse of renowned German footballer Thomas Müller, has candidly shared that the truth feels starkly different. In a revealing interview with the German publication Bild, Lisa Müller opened up about the persistent judgment she faces and the struggle to be recognized beyond her husband's fame.
Fighting Stereotypes and Embracing Identity
Lisa Müller, a 36-year-old accomplished professional dressage rider, expressed how challenging it has been to break free from the label of just "Thomas Müller's wife." Despite her significant achievements, including winning the prestigious Stuttgart Masters in 2019, she finds that many people prematurely categorize her.
"At first, I tried for a long time to fight against it and say: I'm more than that, I can ride. Now I don't care anymore," she stated, reflecting a shift in her perspective over time.
She admitted that people often assume she is less intelligent before even engaging in conversation with her. "It's sometimes quite amusing. I'm always considered the dumbest person in the room," Lisa added. "Sometimes it's nice to be considered the silly one, then you can impress people more when they talk to you." Her remarks highlight that being married to a global football icon does not always equate to a glamorous or easy life.
Navigating a Long-Distance Marriage
The dynamics of Lisa and Thomas Müller's relationship underwent a significant change when Thomas transferred to Major League Soccer side Vancouver Whitecaps. This move created a geographical separation of approximately 5,200 miles, with a flight time of over 10 hours between Germany and Canada.
Lisa Müller chose to remain in Germany to manage her stables and co-own a horse breeding business, EU Insemination Station, with her husband. She explained their mutual understanding, saying, "As an athlete, he knows how much I live for my sport. As an athlete, I know how much he lives for his."
This isn't the first time her preferences have influenced Thomas's career. In 2015, former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal disclosed that a potential transfer fell through partly because Lisa Müller was reluctant to leave Bavaria. He remarked, "In 2015, it would have been possible if his wife had been a little more open to a transfer abroad."
A Multifaceted Life Beyond Sports
Away from the equestrian and football worlds, Lisa Müller is actively involved in politics. She is a member of the Christian Social Union (CSU) and completed an internship with the Bavarian State Parliament. In an interview with Antenne Bayern, she affirmed, "The CSU is my political home."
Despite her diverse accomplishments, Lisa notes that skepticism from others persists. However, she has adopted a calm approach, choosing to let her work and actions speak for themselves rather than constantly battling preconceived notions.
The couple's story began in 2007 when they met at age 18, with Thomas Müller then rising through the Bayern Munich academy. They married two years later and spent much of their marriage in Bavaria as Thomas built a legendary 17-year career at Bayern Munich before his move to North America.
Lisa Müller's insights offer a rare glimpse into the personal sacrifices and societal pressures faced by those in the spotlight, reminding us that behind the shiny facade, real-life challenges and individual identities thrive.
