Mohanlal-Mammootty Starrer 'Patriot' Clears Release Hurdle After Revenue Dispute Resolution

The highly anticipated Malayalam film 'Patriot', featuring superstars Mohanlal and Mammootty, has overcome a major obstacle as the temporary ban on its release has been officially lifted. This decision follows successful negotiations between exhibitors and producer Anto Joseph, paving the way for the movie's scheduled theatrical debut on May 1. Directed by Mahesh Narayanan, the project had faced uncertainty due to conflicts over box office revenue distribution.

Exhibitors and Producers Reach Agreement on Revenue Sharing Terms

Earlier, the Film Exhibitors United Organisation of Kerala (FEUOK) imposed a stall on 'Patriot' after producers and distributors demanded an unconventional 60:40 split in their favor for the initial two weeks. Exhibitors strongly opposed this proposal, leading to the temporary ban and raising concerns about the film's release timeline. FEUOK president K Vijayakumar confirmed to Onmanorama that the issue has now been resolved through dialogue.

"Initially, the producer insisted on a 60:40 share for two consecutive weeks, which is unheard of in the industry. They have now agreed to follow the existing terms and conditions," Vijayakumar stated, indicating that both parties have found common ground to avoid further delays.

Standard Revenue Structure Reinstated with Minor Concessions

Under the restored agreement, the revenue sharing for 'Patriot' will adhere to the standard industry model:

  • First Week: Producers and distributors receive 60% of box office revenue, while exhibitors get 40%.
  • Second Week: The ratio adjusts to 55:45 in favor of the producers and distributors.
  • Third Week: An equal 50:50 split is implemented between both sides.

Vijayakumar also revealed a slight relaxation beyond the third week, noting, "We have allowed a 50:50 share beyond the third week. Typically, the producer's share declines depending on theatre collections, but we have made an exception in this case." This concession highlights a rare flexibility offered to the makers, possibly due to the film's high-profile cast and anticipated demand.

'Patriot' Back on Track for May Release Amidst Strong Buzz

With the dispute settled, 'Patriot' is firmly back on track for its planned release, much to the relief of fans eagerly awaiting the collaboration between Mohanlal, Mammootty, and director Mahesh Narayanan. The resolution ensures that audiences across Kerala and beyond can experience the film on the big screen without further interruptions, capitalizing on the significant pre-release excitement generated by this star-studded venture.

The timely agreement not only safeguards the film's commercial prospects but also reinforces industry norms, setting a precedent for future negotiations between exhibitors and producers in the Malayalam cinema landscape.
