Mohanlal on Vijay Thalapathy's Stardom and Victory

Actor-turned-politician Vijay Thalapathy assumed the office of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister after his party secured a landslide victory in the 2026 assembly elections. In a recent interview, Malayalam cinema legend Mohanlal, who co-starred with Vijay in the 2014 film 'Jilla,' shared his insights on Vijay's immense popularity and the deep affection people hold for him.

Mohanlal on Vijay's Stardom

During the promotions of 'Drishyam 3,' Mohanlal spoke to Galatta Plus about the inexplicable connection fans have with Vijay. When asked why people feel so drawn to him, Mohanlal remarked that stardom is not easy to define and involves an intangible magic. He explained, 'It's basically the characters we play, not the personal stuff.' According to Mohanlal, audiences connect with actors primarily through the roles they portray on screen, embracing the emotions and image crafted in films.

Comparison with MGR and Rajinikanth

Mohanlal also drew parallels between Vijay and legendary stars like MGR and Rajinikanth. He noted that people loved MGR because of the characters he played in movies, adding, 'We never really looked at the personal life; that is something different.' Regarding Rajinikanth, Mohanlal described his superstardom as immense and difficult to articulate. He emphasized cinema's unique power to forge deep connections with audiences, stating that Vijay possesses a similar bond with his fans, calling it an 'unknowable magic.'
