Mona Singh Opens Up About the Emotional Weight of Her Kohrra 2 Character
In a candid revelation, actress Mona Singh has detailed the profound emotional impact of portraying Sub-Inspector Dhanwant Kaur in the gritty crime drama Kohrra 2. This role marks Singh's first full-fledged police officer character, and she admits that the intensity of the part often lingered with her long after filming concluded.
The Challenge of Switching Off from a Heavy Role
"When the mood of the show is so heavy, switching off isn't easy," Singh confessed. She explained that her approach to acting, which involves learning on the go, made it particularly difficult to detach from the multi-layered and intense character. "I tend to overthink," she added, noting that this tendency compounded the challenge.
The home scenes in the series proved especially taxing. "All the scenes at home, the atmosphere, everything, was extremely intense and not easy to deal with," Singh shared. "Especially in the first couple of days, I was carrying that heaviness with me." This emotional burden became a significant aspect of her experience on set.
Conscious Efforts to Unwind and Recharge
Recognizing the need for mental breaks, the production team deliberately scheduled downtime during filming. Singh recalled a specific instance where they all decided to relax. "I remember saying that it feels criminal to switch off. And the directors were like, 'No, no, it's very important. Just break away, cut the cord. We're not shooting today — just relax. Tomorrow, when we shoot, we'll see a different side,'" she recounted. This intervention helped her manage the psychological demands of the role.
Spiritual and Musical Grounding Techniques
To maintain her equilibrium, Singh turned to music and spirituality. She revealed that she listened to "very mellow music and a lot of Gurbani paath" to center herself. Filming in authentic Punjab locations added to this spiritual ambiance. "Shooting in Punjab, in real locations, added so much. In the morning, there would be paath playing in the background — it was beautiful and very surreal. It really helped me," she explained, highlighting how the environment supported her emotional well-being.
Embracing Authenticity in a Successful Series
Joining the acclaimed series in its second season could have been intimidating, but Singh approached it with a philosophy of authenticity. "I don't try to fit in. I just try to be myself. There's no need to blend in, you stand out by being authentic and honest," she stated. This mindset allowed her to navigate the pressures of stepping into an established narrative without feeling overwhelmed.
Through her portrayal of Sub-Inspector Dhanwant Kaur, Mona Singh not only adds a new emotional depth to Kohrra 2 but also demonstrates the personal resilience required to tackle such demanding roles in contemporary television.
