Neeru Sehgal Reflects on Her Transformative Role in Kohrra Season 2
Actress Neeru Sehgal, who recently captivated audiences as Loveleen in Netflix's critically acclaimed series Kohrra Season 2, has opened up about the profound journey behind her performance. Her portrayal brought a compelling blend of emotional depth, quiet strength, and genuine warmth to the narrative, leaving a lasting impact on viewers. Before venturing into long-format storytelling with this Netflix debut, Sehgal had already established an impressive career in advertising, featuring in over 40 high-profile campaigns that honed her craft.
Intensive Character Workshops with Rannvijay Singha
For Kohrra Season 2, Neeru Sehgal engaged in rigorous character workshops alongside co-star Rannvijay Singha, led by director Nitin. These sessions were meticulously designed to build a rich backstory and explore the emotional layers of her character, Loveleen. In an exclusive interview, Sehgal shared key discoveries that emerged during this collaborative process.
"Working with Rannvijay during the workshop was an honestly great experience for me," Sehgal revealed. "The workshop, conducted by Nitin sir, involved lots of in-depth emotions exploring, deep contemplating, character building, and yes, lots of tears." Through this immersive approach, she uncovered nuanced aspects of Loveleen's personality—her silences, contradictions, and underlying resilience.
One of the most significant revelations was understanding that Loveleen's vulnerability was not a weakness but a source of power. "I found layers of resilience and emotional depth in her that weren’t obvious on paper, and it clearly reflected on screen and in the subtexts of her dialogues," Sehgal noted. She emphasized that approaching a character with honesty rather than judgment allows for a truthful on-screen representation, a lesson that resonated deeply throughout the filming.
Filming in Punjab's Harsh Winter Conditions
The production of Kohrra Season 2 took place in Punjab during its notoriously harsh winter, presenting both challenges and opportunities for the cast and crew. Sehgal described how the extreme cold tested the team's endurance but ultimately enriched the storytelling.
"Shooting in Punjab’s harsh winter wasn’t easy at all, but it could not shake our entire team of Kohrra," she stated. "There were days when the cold really tested us. But in a strange way, it helped us drop my guard and feel the rawness of Punjab that we were portraying in the series."
The authentic locations and weather conditions contributed to an atmosphere of utmost honesty and beautiful filmmaking that cannot be replicated artificially. "All the winter and Punjab’s fog only added to the beauty of the show," Sehgal added, highlighting how these elements enhanced the visual and emotional texture of the series.
Anticipating Audience Resonance and Personal Milestones
When asked if she anticipated the strong audience response to Kohrra Season 2, Sehgal admitted that during filming, the focus was solely on telling the story in the most captivating manner. "You never really know how something will land," she remarked. However, the team was confident given the massive success of the first season and the eager anticipation from fans.
Sehgal recalled moments on set that hinted at the project's special nature. "There were moments on set, especially during some of the more intense scenes, when I felt this quiet magic… like we were part of something deeper than just a show," she shared. For instance, the intense fight scene between characters Sam and Preet created a palpable silence on set, giving everyone goosebumps.
As her first Netflix series, Sehgal knew from the beginning that this project would hold significant personal importance. "I knew it from the beginning that this is going to be most special to me as an actor, after all it is my first ever Netflix show," she said. The profound connection audiences formed with the series reaffirmed its status as a milestone in her acting journey.
Lasting Lessons from the Kohrra Experience
Reflecting on her overall experience, Sehgal offered insights that extend beyond the screen. "To whoever reading this, know this that for us actors it's a privilege to be playing someone else on screen and bringing that character to life," she expressed. The process from auditioning to filming taught her valuable lessons in perseverance, resilience, and trusting the creative process.
"During the whole process from auditioning to getting locked to shooting for Kohrra has taught me perseverance, resilience, trusting the process, staying true to yourself, be rooted, grounded, humbled and these will stay with me forever and ever," Sehgal concluded, underscoring the transformative impact of this role on her personal and professional growth.
