Kolkata Actor's Tragic Death Ignites Fury Over Political Trolling and Insensitive Social Media Comments
The untimely death of actor Rahul Arunoday Banerjee has triggered widespread public outrage in Kolkata, not just over the loss of a talented performer, but over the distasteful and offensive comments that flooded social media platforms in its aftermath. The incident has highlighted the disturbing trend of politicising personal tragedy and the insensitivity of online trolling.
Public Figures Condemn the Insensitivity
Soumen Dutta, a general manager at a multinational pharmaceutical company, expressed his shock at the crude online behavior. "Don't they understand that the departed soul transcends politics?" Dutta questioned. "Political ideologies may differ, but how can people be so heartless as to post such distasteful messages?" He noted that many comments appeared strikingly similar in style, suggesting they might originate from coordinated sources. "How insecure must a political party be to target the deceased for electoral advantage?" he added.
Actress Rayati Bhattacharya described the situation as "gut-wrenching," lamenting how society now judges rather than mourns the dead. "I find that political belief screams louder than a drowning man's last breath," she stated, capturing the overwhelming nature of the political discourse surrounding the tragedy.
Co-Actor's Personal Anguish and Disgust
Bhaskar Banerjee, who was filming with Rahul just before his passing, shared his profound shock and grief. Having learned of his co-actor's death while traveling to Chandipur, Banerjee revealed they had recently shot a lighthearted scene together for their serial. "The incident was utterly shocking for all of us," he said. "I am completely disgusted by the vicious politicisation of his demise."
He emphasized the human loss, stating, "Here is a young man who has died. Nobody seems concerned about the devastating loss to his son or his mother. All they care about is gaining political mileage before the elections." Banerjee expressed equal dismay at how individuals from across the political spectrum have participated in this exploitation. "It is absolutely filthy to witness a political war over a body. How have we stooped to such depths?" he asked.
Local Community Objects to Political Sloganeering
In Rahul's Bijoygarh neighborhood, residents strongly objected when political slogans were shouted outside the grieving family's home on Monday morning. Locals emphasized that while they had no issue with political candidates visiting to offer condolences, the sloganeering was entirely inappropriate. "The family is in mourning, and such behavior shows complete disrespect," one neighbor stated.
Sanju, a local shopkeeper, echoed this sentiment, saying, "Campaign slogans should never be raised at a household in mourning." The political visits began on Sunday evening with Jadavpur candidate Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharya meeting Rahul's mother and wife. They continued on Monday with BJP candidate Papiya Adhikari and state minister Aroop Biswas, who represents Trinamool in Tollygunge and had been with the family since Sunday.
A Broader Societal Concern
This incident has sparked a crucial conversation about the boundaries of political discourse and the basic human decency expected in times of tragedy. The combination of coordinated online trolling and insensitive real-world politicking has left many questioning the moral compass of contemporary political engagement. As Kolkata mourns the loss of one of its artistic talents, the community's outrage serves as a powerful reminder that some moments should remain sacred, beyond the reach of political opportunism and social media vitriol.
