The much-anticipated Pongal box office clash in Tamil cinema has been thrown into disarray, with Sivakarthikeyan's film Parasakthi now facing a release hurdle. Despite its director recently praising the censor board's process, the film's certification has been unexpectedly held back, casting doubt on its scheduled premiere on January 10, 2026.
Festive Season Plans Disrupted
This Pongal season was set for a major cinematic showdown between two of Tamil Nadu's biggest stars. While Thalapathy Vijay's Jana Nayagan was postponed earlier, the spotlight has now shifted to Sivakarthikeyan's Parasakthi. According to a PTI report on Thursday night, the film's release is being held up due to delays in securing the final certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The lack of official clearance has created widespread uncertainty, with theatre bookings reportedly impacted across several regions.
Director's Praise Contrasts with Current Crisis
In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Sudha Kongara, the director of Parasakthi, had spoken positively about her experience with the CBFC's revising committee. She described the board's head as "democratic" and "fair," commending the cooperative approach and the way they allowed the film to "live and breathe." Kongara, a self-proclaimed believer in democracy, even thanked the officials for their process. This makes the current certification delay particularly surprising and contradictory to her earlier experience.
Industry Voices Concern Over Systemic Issues
The last-minute delay has sparked concern within the film industry. Noted filmmaker Karthik Subbaraj took to social media platform X to highlight the broader issue. He pointed out that bookings for Parasakthi were yet to open in many centres due to the pending certificate. Subbaraj argued that the current censorship process, especially for big-budget films with international distribution commitments, lacks necessary streamlining and flexibility. He emphasized that production teams need a clear window of at least three months for clearance to avoid such disruptive last-minute chaos, warning that repeated postponements around festival dates could harm the industry's health.
The ripple effect is significant. Exhibitors have been cautious, holding back advance ticket sales for both major Pongal releases until official green signals are received. As of now, the makers of Parasakthi have not issued any official statement or clarification regarding the certification delay or a potential change in the release date. The fate of the film's grand January 10 release now hangs in the balance, leaving fans and the industry in a state of suspense.
