Priya Kapur Files Defamation Case in Sunjay Kapur Estate Fight

Priya Kapur Takes Legal Action Against Sister-in-Law in Estate Dispute

Priya Sachdev Kapur has escalated the ongoing legal fight over her late husband Sunjay Kapur's estate. She filed a criminal defamation complaint against Sunjay's sister, Mandhira Kapur Smith, and another individual. The complaint alleges serious reputational harm from defamatory statements made on digital platforms.

Defamation Complaint Details

Priya Kapur's legal team presented the complaint before the Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate at Patiala House Courts in New Delhi. The document states that the remarks contain false assertions and personal attacks presented as established facts. These statements appeared despite the issues being sub judice.

The complaint further claims the statements aimed to malign and harass Priya Kapur through public discourse. This approach bypassed lawful legal remedies. Senior advocate Maninder Singh and counsel Smriti Asmita represent Priya Kapur in this matter.

Supreme Court Involvement

This criminal defamation case emerges alongside another legal development. The Supreme Court sought actor Karisma Kapoor's response on Friday. Priya Kapur requested a certified copy of Sunjay Kapur's divorce settlement with Karisma.

Mandhira Kapur Smith opposes this plea. She alleges it attempts to divert attention from the core inheritance dispute. The estate battle involves multiple family members and remains pending before several courts.

Background of the Estate Battle

Sunjay Kapur served as chairman of Sona Comstar before his passing. He married Karisma Kapoor in 2003, and they had two children together. Their daughter Samaira was born in 2005, and their son Kiaan arrived in 2011. The couple filed for divorce in 2014, finalizing it in 2016.

After the separation, Sunjay Kapur married Priya Sachdev. They later welcomed a son named Azarias. The inheritance dispute intensified when Priya presented a document to the Delhi High Court in August last year. She claimed this document represented Sunjay Kapur's will.

Samaira, Kiaan, and Rani challenged this will. The estate's actual value remains unclear despite some reports suggesting assets worth around Rs 30,000 crore. Karisma Kapoor's children have stated they lack knowledge about the estate's true valuation.

The legal proceedings continue across multiple courts as family members pursue their claims. The defamation complaint adds another layer to this complex inheritance battle.
