Priyadarshan Addresses Plagiarism Allegations for 'Bhooth Bangla' Song
Renowned filmmaker Priyadarshan has responded to accusations of plagiarism surrounding his upcoming horror drama 'Bhooth Bangla', starring Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar. At the trailer launch event on Monday, the director firmly defended the film's use of a lyrical expression from the classic Bengali song 'Bhuter Raja Dilo Bor' by the legendary Satyajit Ray.
Defending Creative Freedom in Cinema
Priyadarshan expressed immense respect for Satyajit Ray, calling him "one of the masters from whom I learnt cinema". He argued that the use of the word 'Bhoot' (ghost) in the song 'Ram Ji Bhala Karein' from 'Bhooth Bangla' does not constitute plagiarism. Drawing a parallel, he questioned how many Indian songs have used the word 'Deewana' (madly in love), stating that "only the first person who used the word 'deewana' has the right to use it" would be an unreasonable restriction.
The director emphasized that the tune of the song is entirely original and unrelated to Ray's work. He explained that the lyricist wrote the lines with confidence, as there is a clear context: the film's title 'Bhooth Bangla' itself references ghosts, and there is a previous film with a similar name. Priyadarshan reiterated his reverence for Ray, describing him as "the god of Indian cinema", but maintained that such repetitions are natural in creative fields.
Star-Studded Cast and Release Details
'Bhooth Bangla' boasts an impressive ensemble cast, including Akshay Kumar, Paresh Rawal, Tabu, Rajpal Yadav, Jisshu Sengupta, Asrani, Mithila Palkar, and Rajesh Sharma. Directed by Priyadarshan, the film is set to hit cinemas on April 16, 2026, promising a blend of horror and drama that has already sparked significant buzz in the entertainment industry.
The controversy highlights ongoing debates about artistic inspiration versus plagiarism in Indian cinema, with Priyadarshan's comments shedding light on the fine line between homage and infringement. As the release date approaches, audiences eagerly await to see how this star-powered project navigates these creative waters.
