The Indian film industry mourns the loss of legendary actor Dharmendra, who passed away at age 89 due to age-related health issues. Among those deeply moved by his passing is veteran actor-director Sachin Pilgaonkar, who shared a special bond with the beloved star spanning over five decades.
A Friendship Spanning Generations
In an emotional conversation with ETimes, Sachin Pilgaonkar opened up about his long and cherished association with Dharamji. The veteran actor-director revealed that their first collaboration happened when he was just nine years old in the 1967 film 'Majhli Didi', directed by the legendary Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
"Dharamji was not only the most handsome actor but also one of the most humble personalities I have ever encountered," Sachin recalled emotionally. He remembered being awestruck by the incredibly handsome man on set who spoke gently and respectfully to everyone, from co-stars to technicians.
Their professional relationship continued to blossom over the years with collaborations in several notable films. They worked together again in 'Resham Ki Dori' (1974), where Sachin played the younger version of Dharmendra, followed by iconic movies like 'Sholay', 'Dil Ka Heera', and 'Krodhi'.
Special Moments and Professional Respect
As their familiarity grew warmer over the years, Sachin eventually had the privilege of directing the veteran star in 'Aazmayish'. "As a director, I am fond of all my actors, but directing Dharamji felt truly special," he shared, highlighting the mutual respect they shared.
One of the most heartwarming anecdotes Sachin revealed involved the now-famous title 'Yamla Pagla Deewana'. Sachin had registered the title with IMPPA and had refused a producer who asked for it. However, when Dharmendra himself called with his characteristic warmth, Sachin immediately responded, "It was mine only until you asked for it. Now it's yours."
This gesture demonstrated the deep affection and respect between the two artists, showing how Sachin couldn't refuse the man he admired so much.
Final Farewell to a Legend
Dharmendra passed away on November 24 at his residence after being briefly hospitalized in November. Though he had been discharged to continue recovery at home, the veteran actor ultimately succumbed to age-related health issues.
His mortal remains were taken to a crematorium in Mumbai, where Hema Malini and the entire Deol family were present for the final rites. The funeral saw an outpouring of love from Bollywood's biggest names, including Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Govinda, and Shah Rukh Khan, who came to pay their respects to the departed legend.
Sachin Pilgaonkar ended his emotional tribute with poignant words: "What can we give to a man who has given so much to Indian cinema? His legacy will always stand tall." This sentiment echoes throughout the industry as colleagues and fans alike remember the immense contributions of the beloved actor.
