Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan: Redefining Bollywood Romance for Two Decades

For nearly twenty years, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan have not only defined but also defied the conventional expectations of a Bollywood power couple. Long before social media transformed celebrity relationships into public spectacles, they proudly showcased their love, from selecting each other at the height of their careers to building a family while preserving their distinct identities as stars.

The Origin of Saifeena: Bollywood's Original 'It' Couple

Popularly dubbed Saifeena, they emerged as Bollywood's first iconic couple, setting a benchmark for authenticity. In a recent exclusive interview at the Tiffany & Co. boutique in Mumbai, the duo opened up about their journey, highlighting quiet celebrations, the role of friendship in romance, parenting philosophies, and why love must never become mundane amidst life's responsibilities. The following are excerpts from this special Valentine's Day conversation.

'If We're Together, Unhurried, That's Celebration Enough'

When asked about their Valentine's Day traditions, Saif revealed, "We don't plan grand gestures. We watch a movie, stay at home, lounge on the couch, and have a night in with pizza and some great wine or Chinese food." Kareena added, "If we're together and unhurried, that's celebration enough." Regarding gifts, Saif explained, "I like to gift her when it feels right. Not just because the calendar says so." Kareena agreed, noting, "It's nicer when it comes with a thought behind it."

'We Didn't Fall in Love Trying to Impress Anyone'

Next year marks two decades since they first met on the sets of Tashan, a film that may not have succeeded commercially but sparked a successful personal union. Saif reminisced, "We didn't fall in love trying to impress anyone. We were working, talking, arguing, laughing and one day it just became obvious. That honesty is still the base of everything." Kareena emphasized, "We chose each other as people first. Everything else came later."

'It's Very Romantic to Wake Up with a Woman This Beautiful Every Day'

Their love story has inspired many, and when questioned about its romanticization, Kareena declared in her signature style, "I'd say the love story is far better in real life." Saif elaborated, "It's very romantic to wake up with a woman this beautiful every day. But the story has required a lot more than what meets the eye. Relationships are about romance but also about intent. And mostly friendship." Reflecting on their current dynamic, Kareena feels "settled and anchored, in the best way," while Saif expressed, "I feel chosen every day by a wonderful woman, who is brilliant, beautiful and kind."

'Kareena Is More Romantic'

Echoing Shah Rukh Khan's famous line, 'Pyaar dosti hai,' both Saif and Kareena affirm that friendship preceded romance and continues to shape their bond. Kareena stated, "Completely! He's still the person I want to gossip with at the end of the day." Saif added, "And she's the first person I want to share things with, good or bad." When quizzed on who is more romantic, Saif promptly responded, "She is!" Kareena laughed and said, "We both have different styles, but I will take that, I am."

'We Just Get Each Other Without Words'

From friends to partners to parents of Taimur and Jeh, they discussed what has evolved. Kareena explained, "What's changed is perspective. What hasn't changed is comfort. He is home!" Saif noted, "There's no pretending. That's a luxury in itself. The ease of being around someone is the best leisure." They continue to live on their own terms, especially in family matters. Kareena confessed, "More than ever. Especially after children. Having Saifu by my side... is my favourite part of everyday life." Saif concluded, "When you're free with each other, everything else becomes easier. Life is full of chores, love can't be one of them. We don't have to explain anything to each other. We just get each other without words."
