Samay Raina Hints at Season 2 of Controversial Show 'India's Got Latent'
Popular comedian Samay Raina has teased a potential second season of his controversial show "India's Got Latent" in a newly released stand-up special. In this over one-hour-long act, Raina delves into the intense controversy that erupted last year, leading to multiple FIRs being filed against him and other panelists on the show.
The Controversial Episode and Its Aftermath
In February last year, a joke made by YouTuber Ranveer Allahbadia on an episode of "India's Got Latent" sparked nationwide outrage. This resulted in numerous FIRs being registered against every comedian who participated in that particular episode. The backlash was so severe that Raina ultimately decided to delete the entire show from YouTube.
"I don't think the season one of my show would have ended on a bigger high than this," Raina remarked in the special, which was uploaded just last night. He continued, "I will definitely bring back the show because I enjoyed doing that show. I want to do a wild show and you watch the softie version after censors."
Emotional Recollections and Personal Impact
During an emotional segment of his performance, the 28-year-old comedian recalled the moment he completely broke down. He described seeing a video sent by the wife of Balraj Singh Ghai, the owner of Habitat club where the show was filmed. The video showed Ghai's elderly parents, in their 70s, pleading with young police officers.
"They were falling to the feet of young cops and requesting, 'Sir, please let us go, we have done nothing,'" Raina recounted. "I f***ing broke down looking at the video, and I was just crying."
Raina also shared how disturbed he was when his mother called to check on him. He initially avoided her video call, and when he finally answered, he found her shaking with fear and worry.
FIRs, Apologies, and George Orwell
The comedian revealed that he now faces three FIRs. "I always knew that this will happen but I used to think that I will get in trouble for something that I say," he said. "In that episode, I didn't even say anything. I was just sitting in a corner. We Kashmiris always die in the crossfire."
Raina described how Assam police repeatedly asked him if he was willing to apologize. He maintained that he had said nothing offensive and noted that Allahbadia's joke was an old one. Reflecting on the situation, he recalled a line by George Orwell: "Every joke is a tiny revolution and the revolution must never stop."
However, faced with the police's threat of imprisonment, Raina concluded, "You cannot bring revolution in your society through a joke. If George Orwell was in Assam, he would say, 'Every revolution is a tiny joke'. You only fight when the fight is fair and you have a chance of winning. When the fight is not fair, you f*** off from there. Kashmiri Pandit wisdom."
Criticism from Media and Celebrities
In his signature style, Raina also roasted various media figures, politicians, and celebrities who criticized him. He mentioned comedian Sunil Pal, singer B Praak, and "Shaktimaan" actor Mukesh Khanna.
"B Praak came to criticise us. He said, 'He will never attend our podcast'. Who called you, bro?" Raina quipped. He also addressed Khanna's concern about the show's influence on children, retorting, "Every other month, there would be news that some child had jumped from a building after watching 'Shaktimaan'."
Defending Ranveer Allahbadia
Raina addressed why he chose to retain Allahbadia's controversial line in the episode. "But what you don't know is that he said it eight times. He said many other vulgar things that I edited out. From my POV, I had killed 99.9 per cent germs," he explained.
Despite his determination to defend Allahbadia, Raina admitted he couldn't even do so at his own home. He added, "Ranveer Allahabadia broke character, which is why people couldn't digest what he said."
Overwhelming Response to the Special
The stand-up special, uploaded just last night, has already garnered over seven million views, indicating significant public interest in Raina's candid reflections on the controversy and his future plans for the show.
