Sandeepa Dhar Opens Up About 'Do Deewane Seher Mein' and Its Message on Women's Self-Worth
In a candid conversation, actor Sandeepa Dhar has revealed that her latest film, 'Do Deewane Seher Mein,' tackles the pressing issue of validation and self-worth among women in today's social media-dominated world. She describes the project as a story that "needed to be told" to address the internal struggles many face.
Portraying Naina: A Character of Depth and Relatability
Dhar plays Naina in the romantic drama directed by Ravi Udyawar, which had a theatrical release on February 20. Presented by Zee Studios and Bhansali Productions, the film features Naina as a woman perceived by others as "perfect," yet she grapples with a profound loss of identity and self-worth.
Speaking about her character, Dhar shared that Naina's internal conflicts deeply resonated with her. "There are many things I could relate to in Naina. In fact, I think every girl can relate to Naina somewhere," she said, pointing to universal themes of insecurity and the constant need for external validation.
Societal Pressures and Gender Disparities
The actor highlighted how societal expectations disproportionately impact women, noting that they are often judged harshly for their appearance. "No matter which film you do, you're judged for your looks, judged for your weight. Especially for girls—it doesn't happen as much with boys," she explained. Dhar added that male actors rarely face the same level of scrutiny on social media regarding their appearance.
According to Dhar, the film delves into how the relentless pursuit of perfection—such as flawless skin, ideal weight, and curated Instagram lives—can lead women to disconnect from their authentic selves. "We're constantly living for someone else," she remarked, emphasizing that Naina's journey mirrors the experiences of many young women battling confidence and self-acceptance issues.
Gratitude for a Simple Story in a High-Drama Era
Dhar expressed her appreciation for producer Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who supported what she called a "simple, sweet story" amidst an era often dominated by high drama. She described the film as "slow-paced, a slow burn. Emotions are handled gently and patiently. That's what makes it special."
Cast and Release Details
The romantic drama stars Siddhant Chaturvedi and Mrunal Thakur in lead roles. In a previous interview, Chaturvedi reflected on the February release, calling the month "lucky" for him, as his earlier films like Gully Boy and Gehraiyaan also premiered in February.
This film serves as a poignant exploration of modern challenges, offering a narrative that resonates with audiences navigating the complexities of self-image in the digital age.
