Sara Sengupta Forges Her Own Path with Stunning Dior Runway Debut
In a refreshing departure from the typical star-kid narrative, Sara Sengupta, the elder daughter of acclaimed Bengali actor Jisshu Sengupta, is making significant waves in the fashion industry. The 20-year-old recently captivated audiences with her professional runway debut at the prestigious Dior Fall 2023 show held in Mumbai, signaling her clear intent to build a career in modeling rather than following the well-trodden path into films.
Rejecting Film Offers to Pursue Modeling Passion
Jisshu Sengupta, brimming with paternal pride, openly shared insights into his daughter's career decisions. "Sara received a few Hindi film offers. However, she doesn't want to do films. She wants to focus on modeling," he revealed. Emphasizing her independence, he added, "She made her debut with Dior and she did it all by herself. Young kids these days are quite focused and they know what they want."
This resolve stems from an early experience. Sara had previously acted alongside her father in the film "Uma" when she was just twelve years old. Despite receiving praise for her performance, the experience left her certain that acting was not her calling. "She felt films are not her cup of tea," Jisshu explained. "She got a lot of praise, but didn't enjoy being around so many people or visiting places during promotions. She said she'd rather stick to modeling." This self-awareness at a young age underscores her determination to carve a unique niche for herself.
Jisshu Sengupta's Vision for the Future of Bengali Cinema
While supporting his daughter's choices, Jisshu Sengupta, as an established actor and producer, also shared his ambitious hopes for the Bengali film industry. He acknowledged its artistic successes, noting, "We are winning National Awards at least one every year." However, he was candid about the commercial challenges it faces.
"But, in terms of business we have a long way to go," he stated. "We have got lesser halls than even Marathi films or even Punjabi films in that sense. Bengali films only release in Bengal. We have to work on our content. We need to improve and push ourselves."
Looking ahead, he outlined a visionary goal for cross-cultural expansion. "I have a dream that one day we will make a film in 3 languages — in Bengali and release it in Telugu and in Hindi as well," he shared with optimism. "We will get there. One baby step at a time." This reflects a broader aspiration to elevate Bengali cinema's reach beyond regional boundaries, leveraging quality content to compete on a larger national stage.
The story of the Sengupta family thus presents a compelling dual narrative: a young woman confidently stepping into the spotlight of high fashion on her own terms, and a veteran artist thoughtfully advocating for the growth and diversification of his regional film industry. Both paths highlight a focus on authenticity, hard work, and strategic vision for the future.
