In a stunning revelation from his biography, veteran Bollywood actor Shatrughan Sinha has disclosed the intense pressure he faced from his own family to marry his girlfriend Reena Roy while his wife Poonam Sinha was eight months pregnant with their twin sons.
The Shocking Ultimatum
During one of the most difficult periods of his life in 1983, Shatrughan Sinha's older brother Ram Sinha delivered an extraordinary ultimatum. When Poonam Sinha was eight months pregnant with twins Luv and Kush, Ram summoned Shatrughan to Reena Roy's house and demanded that he marry her immediately.
The biography 'Anything But Khamosh' reveals that Shatrughan was completely flabbergasted by his brother's direct order to marry Reena Roy right there and then. Making matters worse, Ram Sinha had already taken the extreme step of writing detailed letters to all family members and close associates about Shatrughan's relationship with Reena.
A Troubled Love Triangle
The backdrop to this dramatic family intervention was Shatrughan Sinha's complicated personal life. Despite marrying Poonam Sinha in 1980, the actor maintained his emotional entanglement with Reena Roy, who continued to hope he would marry her.
Shatrughan described this as a difficult period where withdrawing from his relationship with Reena was taking considerable time. He acknowledged that his wife Poonam used to cry a lot during this phase, while Reena confronted him with painful questions about whether she was just a toy to be used and cast away.
The actor confessed in his biography that the situation put him on a perpetual guilt trip. When you are at home, you feel guilty about neglecting the other woman. When you are with her, you feel guilty about your wife, he revealed about the emotional turmoil of maintaining an extramarital relationship.
The Resolution and Aftermath
The crisis reached its peak when Ram Sinha threatened to expose the affair publicly if Shatrughan didn't comply with his marriage demand. However, the situation was saved by Shatrughan's secretary Pawan Kumar, who intercepted the revealing letters and alerted the actor while he was shooting outside Mumbai.
Shatrughan ultimately refused to bow to his brother's pressure. Soon after these events, Reena Roy moved on and married Pakistani cricketer Mohsin Khan, with whom she welcomed daughter Sanam Khan.
The incident led Shatrughan to realize that his older brother might have been resentful of his success. He noted that Ram had not attended his wedding to Poonam, nor been present when their parents passed away.
Shatrughan Sinha continued his marriage with Poonam Sinha, and they welcomed their twin sons Luv and Kush in 1983, followed by daughter Sonakshi Sinha in 1987, while his affair with Reena Roy reportedly ended in 1983.
