Sunil Lahiri Recalls Unsettling Fan Encounter During Ramayan Shoot

Actor Sunil Lahiri, best known for his iconic role as Lakshman in the legendary television series Ramayan, recently shared a chilling fan incident from the show's production days. In a social media video, Lahiri recounted a story that underscores the extreme fame and unexpected challenges faced by the cast during that era.

A Disturbing Incident at His Residence

Lahiri began by describing a recent event where an individual attempted to gain access to his building by falsely claiming to be a relative. "Recently, someone came to our building to meet me, pretending to be my relative. When our security checked, they found out that he was lying, so they sent him away," he revealed. This episode triggered memories of a similar, more ironic encounter from the Ramayan shoot.

The Ironic Fan Meeting During Ramayan

Recalling the past, Lahiri detailed an incident that occurred during a break in filming. "One day, after we had been shooting in the sun for a long time, I had a 2-3 day break. I didn't have a beard, and I had oil in my hair. I was walking near the main gate of the studio when a gentleman came and said, 'Hello, I would like to meet Sunil Lahiri.' I asked him who he was, and he said, 'I am his brother. I am from Bhopal,'" he narrated. The actor found the situation both amusing and startling, as the fan failed to recognize him despite claiming familial ties.

Reflecting on the irony, Lahiri added, "It was amazing. He came to meet me but couldn't recognise me. He pretended to be my brother." He concluded with a philosophical note, stating, "It is said that when your time is right, strangers become your relatives. Take care of yourself. Be happy, be healthy. Jai Shri Ram."

The Enduring Legacy of Ramayan

For context, Ramayan remains one of the most iconic television shows in history, originally airing from 1987 to 1988 on Doordarshan. The cast, including:

  • Arun Govil as Lord Ram
  • Sunil Lahiri as Lakshman
  • Arvind Trivedi as Ravan
  • Dara Singh as Hanuman
  • Dipika Chikhlia as Sita

achieved massive fame and a devoted fan following immediately after the show's broadcast. During its original run, the Sunday episodes would bring streets to a standstill as viewers gathered around rare TV sets in the 1980s.

In 2020, during the COVID-19 lockdown, Ramayan was re-telecast on Doordarshan for over two months, reintroducing the classic to a new generation and reaffirming its timeless appeal. This incident shared by Lahiri highlights the profound impact and sometimes overwhelming attention the show continues to generate decades later.
