Taslima Nasreen Challenges AR Rahman's Communal Remark in Bollywood Row
Author Taslima Nasreen has entered the controversy surrounding AR Rahman's recent comments about communal bias in the Hindi film industry. Nasreen directly challenged the music composer's claims in a detailed post on social media platform X.
Nasreen Cites Bollywood Muslim Superstars
In her response, Nasreen pointed to several successful Muslim artists in Bollywood who continue to thrive. "AR Rahman is a Muslim and is extraordinarily famous in India," she wrote. "His remuneration, as far as I have heard, is higher than that of all other artists."
She specifically mentioned Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Aamir Khan, Javed Akhtar, and Shabana Azmi as examples of Muslim superstars who face no difficulties in the industry. "The famous and the rich never face difficulties anywhere," Nasreen asserted in her post.
Contrasting Experiences of Privilege and Struggle
The author drew a sharp contrast between Rahman's position and her own experiences in India. "Difficulties happen to poor people like me," she stated, recounting multiple instances of discrimination she has faced.
Nasreen described facing housing discrimination, medical mistreatment, and physical violence despite being an atheist. "Even though I am a strict atheist, because of my name I am assumed to be a Muslim," she explained. "Those who are anti-Muslim do not care whether one is an atheist or a believer."
Rahman's Original Comments and Clarification
The controversy began when AR Rahman appeared on BBC Asian Network and suggested that reduced work in Bollywood over the past eight years might have communal dimensions. "It might be a communal thing also," the Oscar-winning composer said during the interview.
Rahman later clarified his statement on Instagram, emphasizing his love for India and his commitment to music that serves all communities. "I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood," he stated. "But my purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music."
Industry Reactions Continue
Nasreen's comments add to growing industry reactions to Rahman's original statement. Several celebrities have already weighed in on the controversy, including:
- Lyricist-poet Javed Akhtar
- Actor Kangana Ranaut
- Journalist Shobhaa De
- Singer Shaan
Rahman's daughters Khatija and Raheema also came to their father's defense, sharing a note that emphasized his right to express his experiences. The note stated clearly: "You may disagree with him, but you cannot deny him the freedom to express his experience."
Nasreen's Personal Connection to India
In her lengthy post, Nasreen also reflected on her relationship with India despite not being a citizen. "Many citizens do not live in India out of love; I live here because I love it," she wrote, describing the country's culture as her own.
She concluded by noting Rahman's widespread appeal across religious lines. "A. R. Rahman is revered by Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, atheists, and believers alike," Nasreen observed. "It does not suit him to be pitied."
The exchange highlights ongoing discussions about representation, privilege, and experience within India's entertainment industry and broader society.
