Varun Dhawan Credits Assistant Director Experience for Bollywood Success

Bollywood star Varun Dhawan recently opened up about the unconventional path that led to his entry into the film industry, emphasizing how hands-on experience behind the camera proved invaluable before stepping in front of it. The actor shared these insights during a candid appearance on the popular comedy program 'The Great Indian Kapil Show,' where he detailed his journey from assistant director to leading man.

Learning Filmmaking from the Ground Up

Before making his acting debut, Varun Dhawan deliberately chose to work as an assistant director to gain a comprehensive understanding of filmmaking. He specifically sought to join the team of Karan Johar's 2010 blockbuster 'My Name Is Khan,' which featured Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol in pivotal roles. "I told my mother that I wanted to assist Karan Johar. I went and met him and eventually began assisting him," Dhawan recalled, highlighting his proactive approach to learning the craft.

This period provided him with an immersive education in both the technical and creative aspects of cinema. By observing the filmmaking process closely, Dhawan developed a deeper appreciation for the collaborative effort required to bring a movie to life, which later informed his performances as an actor.

David Dhawan Praises Son's Dedication

Veteran filmmaker David Dhawan, Varun's father, also reflected on this formative phase during the show. He emphasized his son's serious commitment to mastering the intricacies of film production. "He assisted Karan Johar on 'My Name Is Khan.' Whatever work he was given, he did it sincerely. I was very busy at that time," David Dhawan shared, noting that Varun approached every task with unwavering focus and avoided taking shortcuts.

According to the seasoned director, this dedication was crucial in shaping Varun's professional ethos, demonstrating that the young actor valued the learning process over immediate stardom.

The Photoshoot That Sparked a Career

The turning point in Varun Dhawan's career came when Karan Johar, who had been contemplating launching a new generation of actors, organized a pivotal photoshoot. David Dhawan recounted the moment: "One day Karan said that next time he would come with photographs. He did a photoshoot with Siddharth and Varun, and Alia was also there. He showed the photos and said, 'This is the pair. I am going to produce and direct the film.'"

This photoshoot, featuring Varun Dhawan alongside Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt, ultimately laid the foundation for the 2012 coming-of-age drama 'Student of the Year.' The film, directed and produced by Karan Johar, served as the Bollywood debut for all three actors and quickly became a superhit, resonating strongly with younger audiences.

Legacy of 'Student of the Year' and Recent Work

Released over a decade ago, 'Student of the Year' remains a landmark in contemporary Bollywood, launching the careers of three major stars. Varun Dhawan has since built a successful filmography, with his latest appearance in 'Border 2' receiving decent reviews from critics and audiences alike.
