Khanna recalled, "It was in 2001 when I first met Zohran Mamdani. I had just survived homelessness, left a very abusive job, and started working at Salaam Bombay restaurant in Tribeca. I loved the name, it was also my favourite film by the iconic Mira Nair." He further elaborated on the connection, noting that one day, Mira Nair walked into the restaurant with her young son, Zohran, who was just eight years old at the time. Khanna described Mira as "one of the most supportive humans I met in New York," highlighting how their bond endured over the years, with Khanna having the privilege of catering some of her events.
