In a candid revelation, actor Yami Gautam expressed a strong desire to be part of her husband Aditya Dhar's cinematic venture, the now-historic blockbuster Dhurandhar. The film, which has shattered box office records to become the biggest Hindi cinema hit in India, surpassing giants like Pathaan and Jawan, had captivated Yami long before its release solely through its script.
The Script That Sparked a Wish
In an interview conducted prior to the film's theatrical debut, Yami Gautam shared her immediate reaction upon reading the script for Dhurandhar. She confessed to News18 that the material was so compelling it led to a rare moment of gender-based envy. "When I read his next script, I told him that it was one of those rare moments when I wished I was a guy. The script is so brilliant. It’s such an amazing world," she stated. Her admiration for the project, headlined by Ranveer Singh, was evident, highlighting her belief in its potential impact on audiences.
Professional Boundaries in a Personal Relationship
Despite her personal connection to the director, Yami was quick to emphasize the clear professional boundaries she and Aditya Dhar maintain. She clarified that neither influences casting decisions or other creative choices in each other's projects. "Regardless, I don’t have that expectation. We respect that professional line. I don’t think that line should be blurred. We’re very clear about it," Yami explained. She added with unwavering support, "If he feels that somebody else is a better fit for a part that he’s writing, I would be absolutely fine with it. This understanding was there since the very beginning." Although she did not ultimately feature in the cast, Aditya Dhar included a special thank you for Yami in the film's credits.
From Uri to Vedavid: A Bollywood Love Story
The couple's journey together began on the sets of Aditya Dhar's directorial debut, the 2019 patriotic hit Uri: The Surgical Strike. While Vicky Kaushal played the lead, Yami Gautam held a pivotal role in the film. Their relationship blossomed during the promotional activities for the movie. "During promotions is when we started talking, we became friends," Yami recalled in a recent appearance on the Humans of Bombay show.
She described their courtship as refreshingly unfilmy, devoid of grand, dramatic proposals. "There was ‘oh, I’m going to propose to you’ kind of moment or anything filmy... We just knew that we really want to get married," she shared. The couple tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in 2021 and welcomed their son, Vedavid, in May 2024. Yami also noted the strong alignment and happiness of their families regarding their union.
The story of Yami's wish for Dhurandhar underscores a powerful blend of deep professional respect and personal admiration within one of Bollywood's most celebrated partnerships, even as the film itself continues its record-breaking run.
