Ikkis Release Pushed to Jan 1, 2026 to Avoid Dhurandhar, Avatar Clash
Agastya Nanda's Ikkis shifts release to Jan 1, 2026

In a significant strategic move, the makers of the much-anticipated film Ikkis have decided to postpone its theatrical release. The film, starring debutant Agastya Nanda, will now hit the big screen on January 1, 2026, stepping away from its original Christmas 2025 slot.

The Dhurandhar Wave Forces a Strategic Retreat

The primary reason behind this shift is the monumental and unstoppable success of the film Dhurandhar. The movie has created a veritable tsunami at the box office, showing absolutely no signs of slowing down. With its domestic collections already crossing a staggering Rs 422 crore within just 13 days and worldwide earnings soaring past the Rs 600 crore mark, Dhurandhar continues to dominate screens and audience attention.

Trade analysts noted that releasing any film in its shadow would be a risky proposition, as Dhurandhar is unlikely to surrender prime screens or showtimes during the lucrative Christmas and New Year period. This overwhelming wave left the Ikkis team with little choice but to reconsider their launch strategy.

Avoiding a Hollywood Giant and a History of Smart Moves

Compounding the challenge was the scheduled release of the Hollywood behemoth, Avatar, in India on December 19, 2025. The James Cameron-directed franchise is a global phenomenon, guaranteeing a massive release and sucking up a significant share of the premium screen inventory. Facing a dual threat from a domestic blockbuster and an international giant made the December 25 date untenable.

Renowned trade analyst Taran Adarsh highlighted that this is not the first time producer Dinesh Vijan and his banner Maddock Films have made such a calculated decision. He pointed to past instances where similar shifts paid off handsomely.

In 2017, their film Hindi Medium was smartly moved to a later date after Baahubali 2: The Conclusion locked its release, eventually enjoying a clear run. More recently, in 2024, the period drama Chhaava avoided a direct clash with Pushpa 2: The Rule by shifting to 2025. The postponement of both films worked decisively to their advantage.

What This Means for Ikkis and Its Solo Release

The new date of January 1, 2026, positions Ikkis for a solo theatrical release. This provides the film with a much clearer window to attract audiences without fierce competition for screens. Taran Adarsh also announced that the final trailer for the film will now be unveiled on December 19, 2025, building anticipation for its new year debut.

Directed by the acclaimed Sriram Raghavan, Ikkis is a biographical war drama based on the life of Param Vir Chakra awardee Arun Khetarpal, a hero of the 1971 Indo-Pakistani War. The film holds special emotional significance as it marks the final on-screen appearance of the legendary actor Dharmendra. It also introduces Simar Bhatia, niece of superstar Akshay Kumar, in her acting debut.

This release date change underscores the high-stakes planning that goes into big-budget film releases in today's competitive market. By choosing to step back from a crowded field, the makers of Ikkis are betting on patience and strategy to give the film, and Agastya Nanda's launch, the best possible chance for success.
