Dhurandhar Continues Historic Box Office Run, Nears Rs 900 Crore Milestone in India

Ranveer Singh's period spy thriller Dhurandhar maintains its remarkable box office momentum even after 45 days in theaters. The film has now crossed the Rs 875 crore mark in domestic collections, according to producer Jio Studios. This achievement places Dhurandhar firmly as the highest-grossing Indian film at the domestic box office.

Steady Earnings on Seventh Weekend

The film demonstrated impressive staying power during its seventh weekend. On Sunday, day 45 of its release, Dhurandhar added Rs 3.75 crore to its total. This represented a solid improvement from Saturday's collection of Rs 3 crore. Friday had seen the film earn its lowest single-day collection yet at Rs 1.75 crore, making the weekend recovery particularly noteworthy.

Throughout its sixth week, Dhurandhar accumulated Rs 26.35 crore domestically. The film now stands just Rs 25 crore away from entering the unprecedented Rs 900 crore club in India, a milestone no Indian film has achieved before.

Competition from New Releases

Dhurandhar faced fresh competition from the spy comedy Happy Patel: Khatarnak Jasoos, starring Vir Das and Kavi Shastri and produced by Aamir Khan. The smaller release opened with Rs 1.25 crore on its first day, coming within Rs 50 lakh of Dhurandhar's earnings that day according to Sacnilk data.

However, over the opening weekend, Happy Patel managed only Rs 4.35 crore while Dhurandhar minted Rs 8.50 crore during its seventh weekend. This demonstrates Dhurandhar's continued dominance despite the arrival of new content.

Global Performance and Rankings

On the worldwide stage, Dhurandhar has amassed an impressive Rs 1333 crore globally. This achievement makes it the fourth highest-grossing Indian film ever worldwide, having surpassed blockbusters like Yash's KGF: Chapter 2 and SS Rajamouli's RRR.

The Pushpa 2 Challenge

Despite its phenomenal success, Dhurandhar still faces a significant challenge in the global rankings. The film needs over Rs 400 crore more to surpass Sukumar's 2024 Telugu action thriller Pushpa 2: The Rule, which currently holds the third position with Rs 1742.10 crore worldwide.

Pushpa 2, starring Allu Arjun, recently expanded to the Japanese market but opened with lower-than-expected numbers. According to Sacnilk, the film registered only 886 admissions on its opening day in Japan. This performance falls short compared to other Indian films that have done well in Japan, including RRR, Saaho, and Kalki 2898 AD, all of which exceeded 1000 admissions on their respective opening days.

Looking Ahead to Greater Heights

Even if Dhurandhar manages to surpass Pushpa 2 globally, two more formidable records await. The film would still need to edge past Baahubali 2: The Conclusion at Rs 1788.06 crore and Dangal at Rs 2070.30 crore to become the highest-grossing Indian film worldwide.

The continued strong performance of Dhurandhar after six weeks demonstrates the film's enduring appeal with audiences. Industry observers now watch closely to see if this Aditya Dhar-directed period spy thriller can maintain its momentum long enough to achieve these historic milestones.
