Post-Pandemic Evolution: Hindi Cinema Audiences Embrace Genre Diversity

The landscape of Hindi cinema has undergone a remarkable transformation in the post-pandemic era, with the 2025 box office report revealing a significant shift in audience preferences. While action-drama Dhurandhar (₹894.45 crore) emerged as the highest grosser of the year, it was closely followed by period drama Chhaava (₹600.10 crore), signaling a broader acceptance of diverse content.

A Year of Multiple Success Stories

The 2025 box office performance demonstrates a healthier and more resilient industry, with as many as 15 original Hindi films crossing the ₹100 crore mark compared to just six in 2024. This impressive growth highlights changing audience dynamics and a move away from the post-pandemic caution that previously dominated viewing patterns.

Expert Insights on Changing Audience Behavior

Industry experts unanimously acknowledge that hit movies are no longer driven entirely by action or VFX spectacles, as was the case immediately following the pandemic. According to Devang Sampat, Managing Director of Cinépolis India, 2025 marked a significant year for genre diversity in Hindi cinema.

"Action and drama continue to lead the box office – that fundamental audience preference hasn't changed. What has changed is that other genres are now finding commercial success alongside tentpoles, not in isolation," Sampat explained. He described this trend not as a replacement of what works but as an expansion of what can work successfully.

The immediate post-pandemic years were characterized by audience caution, with people returning to theaters selectively and gravitating toward spectacle and proven franchises. "In 2023, that translated into near-unilateral dominance of action and mass entertainers. That concentration has eased," Sampat noted.

Confidence Returns to Theaters

Bhuvanesh Mendiratta, Managing Director of multiplex chain Miraj Entertainment Ltd, agrees that genre variety is much stronger today than immediately after the pandemic. "Audiences are now confident again about coming to theatres. They are not only chasing scale or stars, but also strong stories," he observed.

Mendiratta emphasized that filmmakers have recognized this shift in audience expectations. "Formula cinema alone is not enough anymore. There is more focus on original storytelling, tighter scripts and genre experimentation," he said, adding that this represents a very healthy sign for the industry's sustainability.

Industry-Wide Benefits of Genre Diversity

The diversification of successful genres brings multiple benefits to the film industry:

  1. Better weekday footfalls for exhibitors
  2. Increased repeat visits to theaters
  3. More sustainable cinema-going culture throughout the year
  4. Reduced reliance on just five or six big films annually

Ashish Saksena, Chief Operating Officer - Cinemas at BookMyShow, highlighted the significance of this trend: "The strong performance of films across multiple genres is a meaningful signal of a maturing and increasingly resilient industry."

Return to Cinematic Roots

Independent exhibitor Vishek Chauhan pointed out that Hindi cinema has returned to its traditional strengths after becoming overly realistic in recent years. "Hindi cinema has gone back to its roots with melodious music, hardcore romance and dialogues that appeal to audiences beyond the saturated urban, metro centres," he noted.

This return to fundamental cinematic elements, combined with innovative marketing approaches and quality content, has created a more balanced ecosystem where success is distributed more evenly across the calendar.

Looking Forward: A More Discriminating Audience

Saksena emphasized that audiences are now planning their theater visits more intentionally and responding strongly to films anchored in scale, familiarity, or emotional depth. "These patterns point to an audience that is evolving in how it engages with cinemas," he said.

The increasing discernment of viewers and their greater clarity about what they want to watch on the big screen represents a positive development for the industry. Audiences are now rewarding films that offer distinctive storytelling or strong theatrical value, regardless of genre.

This post-pandemic evolution in Hindi cinema preferences suggests a maturing industry where quality content across diverse genres can find commercial success, creating a more sustainable and vibrant cinematic landscape for years to come.
