Indrans' Comedy-Drama 'Aashan' Faces Box Office Decline After Initial Release
The Malayalam film 'Aashan', featuring veteran actor Indrans in the lead role, has completed its first five days in theaters, but the box office performance shows a concerning downward trend. Despite receiving positive initial feedback, the film directed by Johnpaul George is struggling to attract audiences to cinema halls.
Sharp Drop in Daily Collections Raises Concerns
According to industry reports, 'Aashan' experienced a significant decline in box office earnings on its fifth day of release. The film, which premiered on Thursday, February 5, collected only approximately Rs 7 lakh on Monday, February 9, representing a drop of more than half compared to previous days. This decline comes despite a slight improvement in collections on Sunday, February 8, when the film earned around Rs 18 lakh.
The day-wise box office performance reveals a consistent downward pattern:
- Day 1 (February 5): Rs 22 lakh
- Day 2 (February 6): Rs 17 lakh
- Day 3 (February 7): Rs 14 lakh
- Day 4 (February 8, Sunday): Rs 18 lakh
- Day 5 (February 9, Monday): Rs 7 lakh
The total box office revenue for 'Aashan' currently stands at approximately Rs 88 lakh after five days of theatrical run. This performance is particularly disappointing given the positive word-of-mouth the film received during its initial release days.
Indrans Makes Emotional Appeal to Audiences
Concerned about the declining box office numbers, lead actor Indrans recently shared a heartfelt video message urging moviegoers to watch 'Aashan' in theaters. The veteran actor, currently working on Adoor Gopalakrishnan's film 'Padayatra', expressed his inability to personally visit theaters due to his shooting schedule.
"Not just me, more than a hundred newcomers have acted in this movie," Indrans emphasized in his appeal. "'Aashan' is the hope and dream of many youngsters."
The actor made a poignant reference to director Johnpaul George's previous film, stating: "Do not make 'Aashan' end up like 'Guppy'. That is why I made a video like this for the first time." 'Guppy', released in 2016 as Johnpaul George's directorial debut, similarly failed to perform well at the box office despite receiving positive audience feedback.
About the Film and Critical Reception
'Aashan' is a comedy-drama directed by Johnpaul George, known for his previous works 'Guppy' and 'Ambili'. The film features Indrans in the central role alongside a supporting cast including Joemon Jyothir, Shobi Thilakan, Bibin Perumpally, Abin Bino, Kudassanad Kanakam, and Madan Gowri in key roles.
The Times of India has given the film a rating of 3 out of 5 stars, with their review highlighting: "Indrans is the film's emotional anchor. Where 'Aashan' succeeds is in its honesty. The mess, the chaos, and the uneven pacing almost feel intentional, reflecting the disorderly process of filmmaking itself. The film offers several genuinely fun and heartwarming moments that keep it engaging despite its long runtime."
Industry observers note that the film's box office struggle comes despite these positive critical assessments, raising questions about audience preferences and marketing effectiveness for regional cinema in the current entertainment landscape.
