Social media users are mourning the death of John West, the autistic influencer, who died in Baltimore on May 31, as confirmed by his sister, Des. His sister shared a post with the caption, “John recently passed away from natural causes.”
Des has a combined following of 1.4 million across Instagram and TikTok. She gained custody of her brother after he allegedly received inadequate care in his previous living environment.
In another post, Des clarified that John's death was not entirely sudden. He had been dealing with several health challenges for a long time. According to People, she said he had been suffering from “severe dental infections that had gone untreated for decades.” He was also experiencing multiple medical issues, including blood in his urine and ongoing kidney problems.
“Many of you are new here and may have assumed that John was simply a healthy man with autism, but that wasn't the case,” she wrote. “I chose to share the positive parts of his life and journey because not every hardship or medical issue needed to be made public. There was much more to his story than what people saw online.”
John gained widespread love and recognition through Des's Instagram and other social media accounts, where she documented their everyday life together. Their sibling bond and unfiltered warmth gradually attracted a growing audience. Des had long served as his guardian and primary caregiver.
Des’s Instagram post about her brother shed more light on his health struggles. Although he suffered from chronic illnesses, she noted that his condition had “improved significantly over the last two years.” Even so, she said she was struggling to come to terms with his passing and described his death as “unexpected.”
