Veteran filmmaker Bharathiraja, celebrated for his classic films, simplistic lifestyle, and deep connection with nature, remained attached to his roots throughout his life. Although he owned a house in Neelankarai, Chennai, his heart belonged to his farmhouse in the Theni district, where he spent most of his time. The director chose a calm, serene rural existence over an urban one, with the farmhouse offering an environment akin to the settings of his movies.
Farmhouse as Personal Retreat
Bharathiraja's farmhouse in Theni district, located on Ghat Road, was his preferred residence in his later years. According to News 18, he spent considerable time there, enjoying nature and tranquility. It was common for the filmmaker to lead a humble, unassuming life away from the public eye. The property also featured in his films, which drew inspiration from Tamil Nadu's villagers.
Neelankarai Home Kept Him Connected
Besides his farmhouse, Bharathiraja owned a beachfront house in Neelankarai, one of Chennai's famous coastal areas. This city residence kept him connected to the Tamil film industry. However, even with a comfortable home in Chennai, it was well-known that he preferred Theni over the city.
Farmhouse Becomes Farewell Venue
Following Bharathiraja's demise at the age of 84, his beloved farmhouse once again drew attention. It served as the venue for hundreds of admirers, politicians, and film industry figures who came to pay their last respects. His funeral was held there with full government honors, underscoring his bond with his native place. Until the very end, Bharathiraja remained deeply attached to the soil and culture he came from.
