Celina Jaitly has opened up about her portrayal of Sister Nibedita in an upcoming biopic, stating that the goal was never to achieve a physical resemblance to the historical figure. In a recent interview, the actress emphasized that her focus was on embodying the essence and values of Sister Nibedita rather than mimicking her appearance.
Understanding the Character Beyond Looks
Jaitly explained that the filmmakers deliberately avoided prosthetics or extensive makeup to transform her into Sister Nibedita. “The idea was never to look like her. It was about capturing her spirit, her dedication, and her contribution to society,” she said. The actress spent months researching Sister Nibedita’s life, reading her letters and works, to understand her motivations.
Sister Nibedita, born Margaret Elizabeth Noble, was an Irish-born Indian social worker, author, and disciple of Swami Vivekananda. She dedicated her life to education and women’s empowerment in India. Jaitly noted that the biopic aims to highlight her lesser-known humanitarian work.
Challenges of Portraying a Real-Life Icon
Playing a real-life figure comes with immense responsibility, Jaitly admitted. “You have to be true to their legacy while bringing your own interpretation. It’s a delicate balance,” she said. The actress revealed that she consulted historians and spent time in Kolkata to immerse herself in the environment where Sister Nibedita lived and worked.
The biopic, currently in production, is directed by a noted filmmaker who has previously helmed historical dramas. The film promises to delve into Sister Nibedita’s relationship with Swami Vivekananda and her pioneering role in establishing schools for girls in India.
Jaitly’s Return to Bollywood
This project marks Celina Jaitly’s return to Bollywood after a hiatus. The actress, known for films like No Entry and Golmaal Returns, has been living in Dubai with her family. She expressed excitement about the role, calling it “the most challenging and rewarding of my career.”
While a release date has not been announced, the film is expected to generate significant interest given the growing demand for biopics about influential women in Indian history. Jaitly’s portrayal is anticipated to offer a fresh perspective on Sister Nibedita’s enduring legacy.
