Celine Dion Returns to Stage in 2026 After SPS Battle

Celine Dion, the iconic singer known for 'My Heart Will Go On,' is set to return to the stage with a 10-show series in Paris in September 2026. The announcement comes after a long battle with Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS), a rare autoimmune neurological disorder she revealed in 2022.

Health Concerns Lead to Show Cancellations

In late 2021, Dion first realized something was wrong when she postponed the opening of her Las Vegas show. In a statement, she said, 'I'm heartbroken by this,' after canceling all performances from October 2021 onward, including 21 headlining shows in November and early 2022. 'My team and I have been working on our new show for the past eight months, and to not be able to open this November saddens me beyond words,' she expressed.

North American Tour Canceled in 2022

Following the Las Vegas cancellation, Dion canceled all scheduled North American tour dates for her Courage World Tour, citing 'severe and persistent muscle spasms.' She initially hoped to resume her European tour in May but postponed it in April to undergo medical treatment. 'The good news is that I'm doing a little bit better, but it's very slow, and it's very frustrating for me,' she told People.

Diagnosis and Treatment in 2022

In a 2024 interview with People, Dion disclosed she was officially diagnosed with SPS in 2022. Her treatment regimen included medication, immune therapy, vocal therapy, and intense physical rehabilitation five days a week. 'The good thing that's on my side is that I love doing all these things,' she said. By December, she became more vocal about her struggles, explaining how the rare disease affected her daily life. 'While we're still learning about this rare condition, we now know that this is what has been causing all of the spasms that I've been having,' she stated.

Further Cancellations and Documentary Release

In 2024, Dion announced on X that she was 'unable to successfully prepare for and perform the remainder of the tour' due to her SPS diagnosis. She had initially postponed several shows to 2024 and canceled some summer 2023 concerts. Later, she canceled all remaining tour dates through April 2024. However, on June 25, 2024, the documentary 'I Am: Celine Dion,' directed by Irene Taylor, was released, offering an intimate look at her struggle with SPS and its impact on her career.

First Performance After Diagnosis in 2024

In 2024, Dion performed for the first time since her diagnosis at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics, singing 'Hymne à l'Amour' from the base of the Eiffel Tower.

Return to the Stage in 2026

In March 2026, Dion officially announced her return to the stage after rigorous treatment that had put her career at stake. She shared a video on Instagram, calling her comeback 'the best gift of her life.' 'This year, I'm getting the best birthday gift of my life. I'm getting the chance to see you, to perform for you once again,' she said.
