Centre Reviews Diljit Dosanjh's Satluj After ZEE5 Takedown

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has constituted a committee to review the Punjabi film Satluj, starring actor-singer Diljit Dosanjh, after the film was taken down from the streaming platform ZEE5. The decision comes amid allegations that the film contains objectionable content that could disturb public order.

Committee Formed to Assess Content

The MIB announced on July 7, 2026, that a three-member committee has been set up to examine Satluj. The panel includes officials from the Ministry, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), and an independent expert. The committee will submit its report within two weeks, after which the government will decide on further action.

According to a senior MIB official, the review was initiated following complaints that certain scenes in the film glorify violence and contain dialogues that could incite communal tension. The official stated, "The government is committed to ensuring that all content on OTT platforms adheres to the guidelines under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021."

ZEE5 Removes Film Amid Controversy

ZEE5 had removed Satluj from its library on July 5, 2026, just three days after its premiere on the platform. The streaming service cited a review of content as the reason for the takedown. The film, directed by Honey Trehan, had been promoted as a crime drama set in the backdrop of the Punjab drug menace.

Diljit Dosanjh, who plays the lead role, has not yet commented on the development. However, sources close to the actor said he is cooperating with the authorities and believes the film does not violate any laws. The film’s producer, Anurag Kashyap, expressed disappointment, saying, "We have followed all norms. The film was certified by the CBFC for theatrical release earlier this year."

Legal and Industry Reactions

The MIB’s move has sparked debate about censorship on digital platforms. Industry bodies like the Indian Film and Television Producers Council (IFTPC) have urged the government to ensure a fair review process. In a statement, the IFTPC said, "We support responsible content but caution against pre-censorship that could stifle creative expression."

Legal experts point out that OTT platforms are self-regulating under the current rules, but the government retains the power to intervene if content is deemed harmful. Advocate Priya Singh, a media law specialist, noted, "The committee’s findings will set a precedent for how such cases are handled in the future."

Background of the Film

Satluj, released in theaters in March 2026, received mixed reviews. It earned approximately ₹15 crore at the box office. The film’s OTT release on ZEE5 was intended to reach a wider audience. The controversy has now put the spotlight on the film’s themes, which include police corruption and drug trafficking.

The MIB has not disclosed specific details of the complaints. However, sources indicate that a political group had filed a petition alleging that the film misrepresents the Sikh community. The committee will examine the film’s portrayal of religious symbols and historical references.

As the review process unfolds, all eyes are on the committee’s verdict, which could influence future content regulation for digital platforms in India.
