A 26-year-old man from Bihar, Rohit, who moved to Delhi for a better life, now lies bedridden after a devastating fire at a Hauz Rani bed and breakfast on June 3. Working in the B&B kitchen, he was on duty when the blaze erupted. Fearing for two colleagues from his village on the upper floor, he rushed to save them. Trapped by flames, the trio barricaded themselves in a room, smashed a window with a bathroom bucket, and jumped to safety. Rohit ensured his colleagues escaped first, jumping last.
Severe Injuries and Financial Strain
Rohit now lives in a rented room in Khirki Extension with his spine held together by metal rods and multiple fractures. His sister Renu, who cares for him full-time, told TOI, 'I have not received any compensation from either of the governments.' The family struggles to survive, with Renu questioning how any compensation could sustain them all. Local residents rushed Rohit to a private hospital for initial treatment after the jump.
Loss of Income and Education Halted
Before the fire, Rohit earned Rs 12,000 monthly, while his wife and sister worked as domestic helps in Malviya Nagar. His 9-year-old son lived with him in Delhi, receiving home tutoring, while his older son studied in Bihar. Now, with Rohit unable to work and the women forced to quit their jobs to care for him, both children's education has been halted. A local NGO has provided food for the past two weeks, but the family faces an uncertain future.
Waiting for Promised Compensation
Nearly two weeks after the tragedy, the family awaits the compensation promised by authorities. Every day is a struggle with mounting medical expenses, follow-up care, and transportation costs. The hope of financial stability remains a distant dream as they grapple with the aftermath of the fire.
