Dwayne Johnson's Cancer Scare Was Real
Speaking candidly with Esquire, the 53-year-old actor and former WWE superstar revealed he discovered a painful lump on one of his testicles during a shower late on a Friday night. He spent an entire weekend not knowing what it meant, while keeping the news from his wife of seven years, Lauren Hashian.
Johnson had a full-day promotional event for Jumanji: Open World scheduled that Monday, requiring him to perform publicly alongside Kevin Hart and Jack Black while privately facing the possibility of a cancer diagnosis the following morning.
Did Dwayne Johnson Have Cancer?
Dwayne Johnson does not have cancer. His doctor examined the lump first thing Monday morning and diagnosed it as epididymitis. For context, it is an inflammation of the tube at the back of the testicle that stores sperm. The condition is painful but benign. However, the doctor did not immediately rule out cancer at that appointment. He told Johnson he needed an ultrasound the next morning to confirm.
That 24-hour gap is where the story lives. Johnson, who built his career on projecting physical invincibility, first in the WWE Attitude Era and then across a Hollywood filmography worth billions at the global box office, had to spend a full day smiling on stage, delivering speeches, and posing for photos without knowing whether his left testicle might kill him before his 54th birthday. "I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing, and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches," he told Esquire.
The ultrasound cleared him. "By the way: I'm fine," Johnson said. "But I didn't know that then, and the thing was really painful."
Why Dwayne Johnson Hid His Cancer Scare from His Wife
Johnson has known Lauren Hashian for nearly two decades. They married in 2019. His decision to keep the discovery from her was deliberate, and his explanation for it was straightforward. "I didn't even tell Lauren," he said. "I didn't want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about."
Is Dwayne Johnson Alright Now?
Johnson is fine. The epididymitis diagnosis was confirmed, cancer was ruled out, and he has moved forward. He is currently promoting two major projects: the live-action Moana film, scheduled for release this year, and Jumanji: Open World, the latest installment in the franchise.
Johnson told the story mid-flight aboard his private jet, somewhere over the Mojave Desert, tequila in hand, apparently without prompting. The man who cofounded Teremana Tequila, earned a reported net worth close to a billion dollars, and has been floated seriously as a potential presidential candidate, clearly did not need the moment. But he gave it anyway. "But! I'm okay. So." He smiled and took another sip.
It's a relief indeed. Johnson has been one of the biggest WWE and movie stars, with a staggering level of fandom.
