Dwyane Wade, the NBA legend, and his wife, renowned actress Gabrielle Union, have remained united even as they fought for years against her fertility issues. While both appear fulfilled in life with their only daughter, Kaavia Wade, the actress has often spoken about how she never wanted to be a mother initially.
Gabrielle Union's Journey to Motherhood
A few years ago, in an interview with PEOPLE, the “Being Mary Jane” actress said, “I never wanted kids. Then I became a stepmom, and there was no place I’d rather be than with them…” The popular actress added, “So then I thought, ‘Well maybe I might be good at this, and maybe this is something I want to explore…’” She continued, “And I’m madly in love with this dude, so [having a baby] is something we could look into.”
Fertility Struggles and Miscarriages
Unfortunately, when Gabrielle Union decided to embrace motherhood, luck was not on her side. She suffered from brutal fertility issues for years and even went through “eight or nine” miscarriages as she tried to have a family with Dwyane Wade. Despite the physical toll it took on her body, Union wanted to try more treatments, but it was her husband who stopped her from risking her health.
While Union did want to welcome a baby through surrogacy, she and Wade ultimately decided that it was their best route. Months later, in 2018, the couple welcomed their only child together, Kaavia Wade, and life has been a dream for them since.
Life as Parents
Though the two are pretty private about their lives, both Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union often post about their daughter’s achievements. For now, it seems they are in one of the happiest phases of their lives as they enjoy raising their child together, out of the spotlight and in private.
