A special OTT program titled 'The 51st AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Eddie Murphy' was recently released, capturing the event and the heartfelt tributes paid to Murphy. Among the distinguished attendees was Mel Brooks, one of the most iconic names in comedy, who delivered a memorable speech honoring the actor.
During the event, Brooks praised Murphy and referred to him as one of the 'modern kings' of comedy. He began his speech by noting, "Before you were born, even before I was born, the movies were born. One of the great gifts they gave us, perhaps the greatest gift, was laughter. In its earliest days, there were kings of comedy: Chaplin, Keaton, Lloyd."
Brooks continued to commend Murphy for setting a high bar in comedy and being a pioneer in the industry. He added, "Some have talents that burst beyond the screen and onto the stage. They create characters that have us look inside ourselves. And there are some, very few, that did it all. But, tonight, beyond the echo of laughter, we honor a man full of greater surprises, and one who broke barriers to drive culture forward."
