In a courageous act, an 18-year-old girl chased and briefly overpowered a youth who snatched gold jewellery from her family’s shop in the Gola area of Gorakhpur on Monday evening. The entire incident was captured on CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity.

Incident Details

According to police, two youths entered the shop posing as customers and asked to see jewellery. When the shop attendant showed them gold earrings, one of the suspects allegedly grabbed jewellery weighing around 20 grams and fled. Amrita Verma, a BA second-year student who was alone at the shop at the time, immediately chased them for nearly 100 metres.

Brave Chase Captured on CCTV

CCTV footage shows Amrita catching hold of one of the accused and throwing him to the ground. A scuffle ensued, during which she sustained a minor injury to her hand. However, the accused managed to break free and escaped with his accomplice, who was waiting nearby on a motorcycle.

Shop owner Rakesh Verma said the stolen jewellery is valued at around Rs 2.5 lakh.

Police Investigation Underway

SHO Rakesh Roshan Singh said, “Based on the complaint, a probe is underway and CCTV footage is being examined to identify the accused.” SP South Dinesh Kumar Puri added, “A case has been registered under relevant sections of BNS, and efforts are on to trace the accused.”

Community Applauds Bravery

Local residents have applauded Amrita’s bravery, stating that her quick thinking and courage set an example for others. The police have assured that the accused will be apprehended soon.
