Patna: Three employees of the engineering department were injured at Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS), Patna, after junior resident doctors allegedly assaulted them on Thursday, triggering panic inside the hospital premises.
Incident Details
The injured staff were admitted to the emergency ward with head injuries. The incident reportedly occurred in the electrical department on the first floor of the dental block, creating chaos for nearly half an hour as patients, attendants and staff ran for safety. Shastri Nagar police reached the spot and began an investigation, including examination of CCTV footage from the hospital.
Background of the Dispute
The incident is linked to a dispute that began on Wednesday evening when electrical engineer Rishu Mishra went to the radiology department for air conditioner repair work and got into an altercation with junior resident doctors. It is alleged that he was assaulted by a group of 10 to 20 doctors. A complaint was later submitted to the institute director, but victims allege no action was taken.
Thursday's Assault
On Thursday, Rishu Mishra, along with his father Ashok Kumar Mishra, a civil engineer, and lift engineer Aman Kumar, went to follow up on the complaint. After failing to meet the director, they were allegedly attacked near the electrical department by a group of junior resident doctors who had prior knowledge of the complaint.
Saket Kumar, SDPO-II of Secretariat, said, “In IGIMS, a scuffle took place inside the premises between some doctors and maintenance engineers over a maintenance-related issue. It appears there was some confusion between both sides. From the initial understanding, it does not seem like a very big issue.”
Police Deployment
Police personnel have been deployed at IGIMS in three shifts, with one officer and four constables stationed along with IGIMS outpost staff to maintain order.
