Indian-American candidate Tina Shah sparks row with pro-Israel remarks

An Indian-American congressional candidate in New Jersey has stirred a controversy after a leaked audio clip showed her describing herself as the only Democrat in her race fully backing Israel. The incident has reignited debate within the progressive party over the Gaza war and ongoing Middle East tensions, including the conflict with Iran.

Who is Tina Shah?

Tina Shah is a physician and a former White House adviser during the Obama administration. She is currently running in the Democratic primary for New Jersey's 7th Congressional District. In the April 26 recording, she stated, "I am a pro-Israel candidate" who supports "unconditional aid" to Israel, adding that she is "the ONLY candidate" in the race who backs Israel without conditions.

Reactions and Divisions

The audio clip went viral across social media platforms, including X and TikTok, drawing strong reactions from both progressive activists and pro-Israel Democrats. It has deepened divisions within the party over foreign policy. This comes as the Gaza health ministry estimates that 70,000–75,000 Palestinians have been killed since the October 7, 2023 Hamas attack on Israel.

Context of the Conflict

Shah's remarks come as the Israel-Gaza conflict continues to drive political debate in Washington, alongside rising tensions between Israel and Iran. The war in Gaza has led to international concern over civilian casualties and humanitarian conditions.

Democratic Party Fault Lines

The issue has become a key fault line within the Democratic Party. Progressive lawmakers such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez have criticized US military aid to Israel and have pushed for greater protection for civilians in Gaza. Sanders has called for restrictions on weapons transfers, while Ocasio-Cortez has backed efforts like the "Block the Bombs Act".

At the same time, other Democrats have maintained strong support for Israel. John Fetterman has defended continued military aid and opposed an immediate ceasefire, while Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has also backed Israel while calling for increased humanitarian assistance.
