Indian artist Sajid Wajid Sheikh has been honored with the prestigious Henry Clews Prize for the 2026–2027 term, a remarkable achievement in his artistic career. This prize is awarded by invitation every two years by the La Napoule Art Foundation. It provides the sculptor with a year-long residency at the historic Château de La Napoule, along with a research and creation grant.
Residency and Exhibition
The residency will culminate in a summer exhibition that showcases the works developed during his stay at the château. The prize was established in memory of sculptor Henry Clews and his wife Marie Clews, embodying their vision of the château as a haven for artistic freedom, experimentation, and international dialogue. Sculpture remains at the core of this legacy, with the historic site continuing to inspire contemporary artistic practices.
Background and Selection
Sheikh first encountered the château during his 2025 residency under Villa Swagatam, an initiative by the French Institute in India and the French Embassy in India. His selection for this award underscores the lasting impact of such cultural exchange programs.
Commending his achievement, the Ambassador of France to India, H.E. Mr. Thierry Mathou, stated: “Through programs such as Villa Swagatam, France and India are not only fostering artistic dialogue but also laying the foundation for transformative experiences that shape the trajectories of emerging artists. I congratulate Mr. Sajid Wajid Sheikh for winning the Henry Clews Prize, illustrating how these pathways, once initiated, can evolve independently and meaningfully, and contribute to the deepening cultural cooperation between South Asia and France.”
Artist Profile
Based between Navi Mumbai and Aurangabad, Sheikh’s interdisciplinary practice encompasses sculpture, installations, and film. His work often explores themes of resistance and systemic tension, reflecting a deep engagement with contemporary social issues.
